This says 3rd party - what about a write in vote like Lisa Murkowski pulled off in Alaska? To me, a third party means the Reform Party, the Constitutional Party, the Green Party, etc.

At the least, new elections laws can only take effect next cycle.

dear z-taxman,

re: “Unconstitutional”.

I agree, but must remind folks that inside state politics, can be a very different field, than national politics.

I’m 50/50 on Trump making it a third party, because there are enough folks, and will be more folks, as the-queer-in-charge’s time grows shorter, and his deeds stink even more, without any voice from Congress, except ‘yessa, massah’.

In its simplest form, it may be unconstitutional.

It sounds like a good idea to keep out saboteurs to the process, but they need to qualify it by including a significant number of registered voters signing a petition to enable any candidate to then run as 3rd Party. That should get it OK constitutionally.

Unconstitutional.

It appears to me that the Constitution leaves it to each State Legislature to determine the method for choosing that State's Electoral votes.

Jim, that was my immediate reaction. Never mind Trump at the moment... Where in the Constitution does it enshrine the rule of parties? Does no one read Washington's farewell address any more? Oh, right, that's old history made by rich white men, that doesn't count.

Maybe there's a way that law can be changed. It's horribly against original principles.

Actually, it strikes me as an ohio resident that our primary is late. If Trump is ahead or in the running and has been treated fairly, then he holds a primary run in Ohio. If he isn’t treated fairly, he’ll know early, so he withdraws his name from a run in Ohio. Then he has not run in Ohio, so is not invalidated from a 3rd party run. In fact, even if leading he could skip ohio to leverage any shenanigans at the convention.
