Reagan was never on the Left, and his transformation from anti-communist 1950's Democrat to ideological conservative did not happen in the course of an election season.

Both went from Democrat to Republican. Doesn’t matter how recently. It wasn’t long after Reagan’s move that he became one of California’s best governors.
