If they had that much, machining the core parts wouldnt take long, especially if they had the explosive charges already made, and we know they have carried out research on that already.
It takes many martyrs to learn how to machine plutonium. It has many different phases with different ratios of expansion under temperature changes. If the chunk of plutonium on the lathe gets hot, it can expand dramatically and on the next rotation the lathe's tool tip gouges deep into the plutonium.
