'Shocking' 40 per cent surge in gun ownership and registration in NSW

MARK COLVIN: Figures obtained by the New South Wales Greens show a 40 per cent surge in gun registration in the State over the last 14 years.

There are now more than 850,000 firearms in private hands in Australia's most populous state.

And Greens MP David Shoebridge says he's so alarmed by the increase that he will introduce legislation to limit the number of firearms that people can register.

But that has angered gun enthusiasts, as Mandie Sami reports.

MANDIE SAMI: For Kym McEwen there's no surprise that people from a diverse range of backgrounds and locations own firearms.

KYM MCEWEN: It's not all rednecks, you've got doctors, you've got nurses, you've got barristers. It's across the board.

Lucky for the Aussie they have second amendment protection. Oh, never mind. And, barristers with guns. Survey says-----------NO. Lawyers generally can't be trusted.

I run into people who say that since we require that automobiles be registered that firearms should be no different.

I always tell them that maybe auto registration should be done away with.

The typical response is stuttering and spittle spewing.

So instead of lookiing at things like crime statistics, gun crimes commited by legal gun owners, you know logical stuff; simply look at numbers and say, “Ooh! I’m scared of things that go bang! I must limit or ban them!”
Cowardly leftist!

It just shows what the leftist agenda was all along. It never was about safety, or reducing crime, or “common sense”.

It was always about disarming the people.

Austratlia has very strict gun control laws.

Before and after the gun control laws, they have had a very low crime rate.

Doesn’t matter. What the left wants is a disarmed population.

They hate the fact that firearms support an independent mind set.

Actually, if you buy through a FFL, there is a de facto registration.

Case in point. Two murders committed on Crescent City, CA, beach about ten years ago. The weapon was a Marlin Camp Carbine, 45 cal. The police went to all the area gun stores and scoured the 4473s. They then went to the owners and asked that they "volunteer" their gun for tests.

It was in the Sacramento Bee.

You don't really think that when the FFL does the "background" check, that the agency in DC doesn't somehow log your info, do you?

40 percent increase over 14 years? That’s less than 3% per year, not much growth.

“The police went to all the area gun stores and scoured the 4473s. They then went to the owners and asked that they “volunteer” their gun for tests.”

That is why the push for “Universal Background Checks” and legal requirements to report to the police when a gun is lost or stolen. Without those requirements, the 4473 more to register guns is incomplete and ineffective.

Private sales are the safety valve to prevent gun registration.
