Newborn baby found abandoned in stroller in South Los Angeles [umbilical cord still attached]

A baby with his umbilical cord still attached was found abandoned in a stroller near a church in South Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Alex Diaz spotted the stroller near Vermont Avenue and Dana Street at about 10:30 p.m. Monday, but thought it was empty and discarded.

While on a walk with his two young boys at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Diaz took a closer look, saw the baby and notified police.

"When I got up close to the stroller and the blanket was clean, it was just like, 'Oh, I hope nobody did this, I hope I'm not about to find a baby in here,' and sure enough that's what happened," Diaz said. "It was burning hot. He was sweating. His pajamas were soaked in sweat. It was horrible. I don't know how somebody can do something like that, not even animals do that."

The boy, who is believed to be one day old, was transported by paramedics to a local hospital in good condition.

Detectives were searching for witnesses and hoping to collect surveillance footage from nearby businesses in hopes of finding his mother.

The newborn was abandoned just across the street from St. Agnes Catholic Church.

"That's what saddens me about the whole situation that the child was left across the street under a mattress in a stroller, and they could've easily just rang the doorbell and left the child there," Father David Matz said.

Los Angeles County's "Safe Surrender" law allows a parent or guardian to give up an infant at a hospital or fire station if the child is no more than three days old and shows no signs of abuse.

why do I have a feeling that if they can track down the mother they will find she is just a kid and that the child is one brought into this world by molestation or another under age child being the parent......for the babies sake I hope they are not able to track down the kid s family.... because it will make it a lot easier to adopt him out to a good family that will value him immensely. if they track down the family then you can have several others related to the child trying to claim the kid and put the kid into a bad situation

I hope they are not able to track down the mother....

I agree. The child can grow up with a narrative that the mother was frightened but loved her baby enough to put the child where someone would find him and love him (not quite true, but close enough)

Good Samaritan laws should be well-known to people The mother should've known where she can leave the newborn. There have to be assurances that the parent will not be pursued. Why? The purpose is to support life, so a frightened mother does not choose a late-term abortion or abandonment over the child's life.

The whole concept is about not judging the mother who makes the most important choice, to give life to her child.

not even animals do that

Anyone who sees the PP videos knows we are not even close to animals in moral stature anymore.

I think the mother did fairly well, compared to the cruelty exposed elsewhere. The baby is well, and was left in a fairly safe situation where he was bound to be found. She may have been in a great panic, and not thinking too clearly. Now she, and the baby, can go on in life - and I hope they both see good days.

I guess we should be thankful Planned Parenthood Abortion Mill & Baby Parts Co. didn’t get a shot at the mother/baby.

This

Perhaps the person who abandoned the child was scared away from the church entrance by fear or surveillance cameras or a passer by

They were stupid to the point of criminality

But at least they did not abort and sell the baby for his parts

And I hope they are not found until the child us raised in love of a mother and father

I am just happy the baby was found and the Mother didn’t dump the child into a trash can. Personally, I disagree with the 3 day or less only part of the law. I’m not sure what age should be the maximum but perhaps in the first year. Hopefully, this child can be adopted by two loving parents and be loved.

...in hopes of finding his mother.

The mother left to retrieve her panties from a limb in a tree.

I agree with every word of your post. There are many reasons why a mother can find herself alone and in crisis, and just not able to be a mother to a baby, which may be a few weeks or few months old. She should be allowed to leave that role, without reproaches or consequences, and the baby given a home through adoption.
