Donald Trump Leads Republican Presidential Pack, WSJ/NBC Poll Finds
The Wall Street Journal | August 2, 2015 | Janet Hook

Posted on 08/02/2015 6:28:48 AM PDT by abb

Donald Trump has jumped to the front of Republicans’ 2016 presidential candidate field nationally, holding that position even after a spate of incendiary comments by the real-estate magnate about Mexican migrants, other GOP candidates and party leaders, a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll has found.

The poll found that 19% of Republican primary voters picked Mr. Trump as their first choice for president, followed by 15% for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and 14% for Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor who led the field in the last Journal/NBC survey, in June.

The new poll, whose full results will be released Monday, was based on a survey conducted July 26-30, after Mr. Trump made widely publicized controversial statements, such as when he disparaged former GOP presidential nominee John McCain.

Has there been one poll story where they don’t lead off with “Mexicans” (and McCain)? So ridiculous.

That doesn't help much because WSJ won't let you in if you are coming from FR. So, you have to come from Google to get in, which I did.

Anyway, as many are curious about, Cruz is at 9% and Rubio is going down like Lottie's drawers.

This poll really bumped Ted Cruz up in the RCP Average Poll.

Here it is - take a look. Cruz polled 9%. It's been awhile since we have seen him pull that high a percentage.

He has moved up from 8th to 5th and is within an inch of moving to 4th which is, at this point in the race, his natural slot (IMHO).

Yes, this was a big gain. I know Trump is out front, but this was a low number for him. As things settle down, I expect his number to go lower. The top 4 seem about right (I have Cruz and Carson tied)

There is probably at least one and most likely two more polls to be announced before
Tuesday’s end time from which Fox will choose the five polls they’ll use for the debate
qualifier. I expect the top ten as listed at Real Clear Politics will remain the same
with maybe some movement within the averages.

“As things settle down, I expect his number to go lower.”

Just how do you think things are going to “settle down”?

Trump is hitting every note with perfect pitch and he is building a political machine in all the early primary states. How do you think that equates to going lower? As Jeb and Scotty fade look for Trump to suck up higher numbers with Cruz coming up somewhat but still not nearly enough.

I love Cruz but he has about $50 million and Donald has over $300 million in cash in his bank account.

This GOP nomination is Trump’s to lose.

I keep hearing that this is Trump’s to lose. Yet, we are still very early in the process. Trump is not coherent on many issues and his past affiliations/positions are going to cause him trouble.

He is at 19% in the latest poll...good, but not up near 30 like he was. Cruz is gaining momentum underneath...which is also good. Trump will fade when the novelty wears off and the shtick starts getting old.

I could be wrong, but don’t give him the keys to the nomination yet...remember, Guiliani and even Hillary should have won if you looked at polling this early the last time.

Also, look closely at internals of the polls you cite. In Republican polls, Trump doesn’t do as well...

Among Tea Party voters, he is losing to Cruz. Just saying...let’s put things into perspective. If Trump is this strong going into IA and beyond, then I will agree with you.

BTW, doesn’t Trump have 60% of us who definitely WONt vote for him? Not a good sign.

I love Cruz but the Tea Party is the only demographic he is leading in.

Trump is leading in the other demographics. He is the guy who will pull the independents and the disaffected Democrats in a general election.

I would like to see a Trump/Cruz ticket. Cruz is young. In eight years he could skate to the Presidency and the GOP could have 16 years in the Whitehouse.

Right now this nomination is Trump’s to lose. I don’t think he plans to sabotage himself. Look for him to be very polished and toned down next Thurs night and not throwing bombs. He’s a very smart guy.
