CNNs Jake Tapper learned Tuesday what it is like to put someone in their casket early when he offered up his well wishes to former neurosurgeon Ben Carson over the passing of his mother, Sonya Carson.
Only one problem: She never died.
At the conclusion of an interview between the Tapper and Carson on The Lead, Tapper sent his deepest condolences to the 2016 presidential candidate, adding how much he knew his mother meant to him.
This is the first time Ive seen you since you lost your mother, and I just wanted to send our deepest condolences on your lost, Tapper told Carson. I know she meant a great deal to you.
I appreciate that. But she actually sprang back, Carson said smiling and laughing.
She sprang back? a surprised Tapper asked.
It looked like she was on her death bed. We all went down to say our final goodbyes, Carson said. Everybody started praying, and she sprang back!
Oh my god, Tapper deadpanned. I didnt get the memo. I just saw the news and said my condolences. Well thats the best news Ive heard all day!
It is wonderful, Carson added.
The news Tapper was likely referring to was Carsons delaying of events in early May as he kicked off his presidential campaign when he and other family members descended upon Dallas, Texas, to see his mother, who had been ailing from Alzheimers.
While news of Carsons mothers resurgence was not widely reported, TheDCs Alex Pappas gave an update of Sonya Carsons condition in a July 8 story about Gifted Hands, a movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr. about Carsons life and career in the medical field.
His mother remains in his life today, but her health has been declining.
Hours before Carson announced his entry into the presidential race this summer, he got a call that his mom, who has Alzheimers, was no longer eating or drinking.
They basically just said, this is the end, a soft-spoken Carson said. Take her home. And let her die there. Thats news I got the day before the announcement.
In what Carson thought might be their final goodbye, his family rushed to her bedside. His wife, Candy, played the violin while his kids were singing and reading verses from the Bible. Carson said supporters told him they were praying for her.
And to everyones surprise, she got better.
She just all of a sudden bloomed, he said. She blossomed. And she was back, and she was better than she was before.
People in the news media (and politicians) don’t know a darn thing until they read it in the newspaper — and even then they don’t know much.
There’s a reason Jake Tapper is at CNN.
Just sayin’.
Reminds me of that baseball announcer who eulogized James Earl Jones, when it was actually James Earl Ray who had passed away.
The worst still was the night host (which one??) who went on and on about how much he liked guest Martin Short’s wife, asking how she is, and only to have Martin say that she has been dead for a couple years. Short was very gracious but the host looked like a total fool.
Let me say this. He tried to “bush whack” Trump and got his head handed to him but he is far better than Rachall ( the lesbo) Maddcow.
Googled it. It was Kathie Lee Gifford.
Tapper is like that Clapper guy. Both need to be taken to the woodshed by Trump.
Ok so he should have better research, but I think he was intending to be kind.
Foot in mouth .. sure. But it’s not an unreasonable mistake. Much bigger things to worry about at CNN than a well intentioned faux pas.
“The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors...” ~Thomas Jefferson
NO EXCUSE; given Internet.
"The unidentified woman who bolted her breakfast here but then sprang back, but definitely wasn't my mother even though St. Peter thought she was...?"
sounds like a threat.
guess they want Ben to sit down and shut up
Amen.
Just watched Gifted Hands on Netflix. Dr. Carson has a good mom. I am happy to know she is doing better.
I want to mention too that the best thing I have done in a long time was getting rid on DirecTV and going with Netflix. Saving $80 a month! And no commercials, lots of good entertainment.
She got better...
Awkward.
Actually the screw up should be attributed to the “in residence paid liar” at the White House who is responsible for scripting CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS and other network news readers.
It was sad, anyway....
Then Tapper asked Dr. Carson how his brother Johnny was doing in his retirement since he left late night TV...
