The main lesson I think for the other candidates regarding Mr. Trumps great growth here in the last three weeks is, number one, speak out strongly on the issues, said Phil Cavanaugh, an Ottumwa resident who attended Trumps campaign event in nearby Oskaloosa. Its like some of them, if not half of them, are too timid because they dont want to offend. Weve had way too much of that in our entire country.

Cavanaugh, who is co-chairman of the Wapello County GOP, said he hasnt gotten behind a candidate yet, in part because of how large the Republican field is, but he was impressed by Trump, particularly his stance on securing the countrys southern border.

Several attendees left Trumps event saying theyre now considering voting for him in the GOP caucus, the first in the nation.
Hes giving up a lot of money that he could be giving to everyone else because he wants to make America great and Im going to help him do it, said Steve Van Utrecht, who farms corn, soy beans and hogs in Oskaloosa.
Not everyone was completely behind Trump. Margie Fritz, of Oskaloosa, said shes an independent and hasnt yet decided who shell support. Shed like to see Christie in person if he comes to the area.
I like some of his ideas, she said. Nobody is going to run him over. I like him.
