Deal could reduce the number of major U.S. insurance companies from five to three.

U.S. health insurer Anthem Inc is close to finalizing negotiations to acquire peer Cigna Inc and could announce a roughly $48 billion deal as early as this week, two people familiar with the matter said.

There is less incentive for competition because of the strangling regulations of Obamacare.

Does everyone see where this is going? Normally, the government wouldn’t allow these mergers. However, someday soon the government will just take the HI companies, the fewer there are the easier it will be.

How soon before the politicians are calling for a break-up of these insurance giants? Ma Bell might be interested in watching that.
