Anyone who has followed the modus operandi of the GOP leadership since 2011 will understand that even when they begrudgingly conduct votes on conservative priorities they will never stand behind them when it matters. They will never attach them to must-pass bills or budget bills. But if they are committed to passing standalone messaging bills, can they at least push the right legislation?
House Republicans plan to vote on a bill tomorrow that would punish sanctuary cities for not cooperating with federal immigration authorities. Indeed, for the first time in a while, the pressure brought to bear from conservatives and the outrage expressed by the victims of illegal aliens was too much for the political class to ignore. But there is one catch; the bill (H.R. 3009) is actually weaker than the amendment the House already adopted in a budget bill last month. The Senate bill is even worse because it actually weakens enforcement measures in existing law.
The House bill only cuts off grants for the Secure Communities program and two other small law enforcement grants. Secure Communities is the program used to cooperate with federal immigration authorities in detaining illegal aliens. Think about the disconnect on display for a moment: Congress is threatening cities that refuse to participate in Secure Communities with funding cuts to
Secure Communities. That will really scare them.
