He failed to use the proper procedure he had been taught for ejecting. As a result, he injured himself critically, breaking both arms and his right leg.

Though McCain was among them, the REAL POW hero was James Stockdale. He was tortured, endlessly. They wanted him to make some propaganda films, so he sliced up his forehead with a razor so he wouldn’t be “presentable” to the camera. He received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his patriotism.
McCain was there too, but wasn’t tortured because of his lineage - son of an admiral. He eagerly complied to the Vietnamese requests for propaganda films...
McCain graduated at least 7 years before Ollie, who was within two years of the slightly younger Jim Webb. The book, I believe, was The Nightengale’s Song, by Bob Timburg (also of USNA). And I think Bob would take issue with how you’ve portrayed his chapters on JSM.
