I remember something like this.
It happened in the Ukraine.
In 1932. It was called the Holodomor. Millions died.
My grandfather fled the country and that is why I am here today.

I’m glad your grandfather made it out. Which part of the Ukraine? Western I’m guessing. Did he have to evade the NKVD?
