Another earlier poll showed substantial improvement in the number who would consider Trump someone they could vote for. I expect if he continues to gain support, he will be viewed by more and more as someone they could support.

A past poll taken before he announced showed very low support for Trump with less than 40% saying they would vote for him and well over 50% saying they would not. That was lowered to 41% not supporting him and 40% support for him after he announced.

Now it is back up to 60% saying they would not consider voting for him. He may not recover.

For one thing, reports are that evangelicals were not pleased with his comments about communion.

Your point is well taken. It is absolutely silly to put much emphasis on polls that inquire into first impressions, the year before the race even goes into high gear. Most of those who would tell a pollster that they would never consider voting for someone, who up until a few weeks ago, was prominent--but not for anything connected to a political candidacy--are responding to only a very first impression.

While I am not ready to endorse anyone, and lean towards either Cruz or someone yet undeclared, I think that barring a real blunder--and the McCain dust off is not one--Trump could well be elected as a modern, but slightly more Conservative Teddy Roosevelt--who also shocked the timid types with his flamboyance.
