“Sailors To The End” is a good informative read about the Forrestal fire and as far as I know is accurate.
We all fall into their trap from time to time.
The Duke broke my heart and John's RINO politics branded him as sour milk way before he ran for President. Yes, I vote for him, too, as he was the way lesser of two evils.
Over the years I've come to the conclusion both were just way, way too full of themselves as fighter jocks normally are. It is the nature of the beast and in defense of flag and country, you need that to keep flying each and every day, cheating death to to kick ass, take name and totally destroy the enemies of your country.
The common perception of traits for a fighter jocks stem from Thomas Wolfe’s The Right Stuff. In it he asserts that fighter pilots essentially fit a single mold– They are all extremely confident, ultra-assertive, and competitive to the bone. Others have stereotyped fighter pilots as brash beyond belief and flamboyant to an extreme. Toss in a huge dose of A-hole2 and you have both John and Duke in spades.
I do honestly believe had John not married into huge money, he may have gone the Duke route in politics. Money is truly the taproot of all evil in politics and few can swim in that cesspool and survive with an honest integrity not bought and sold to special interest.
That is why I will go to my grave with four political heroes that even I did not agree with all their policies: Teddy Roosevelt, Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan and Sarah Palin.
John will always have my awe and gratitude for the way he conducted himself as a POW. I honestly don't know if I could have stood up to the torture he took and endured--

And I will also like to thank John from the bottom of my heart for giving us Sarah Palin.
Now, The Donald put his foot in it by knocking John for his being captured. The way Trump put it, he tarnished not only all those who also served their time in hell in the Hanoi Hilton, not to mention those who were in the Bataan Death March or Massacre at Malmédy.
I don't want either Donald or John or Jeb as the GOP Nominee and hopefully I will not have to hold my nose when I vote next year.

If this historian got anything wrong about McCain’s actions especially the day after the disaster, please advise. McCain essentially abandoned a burning ship the day after the disaster hitching a helo ride to Saigon with a sycophant New York Times reporter, for some “much needed R&R” (McCain’s words) missing the memorial service for the dead, including his own deck crew and half the pilots in his flight- and apparently without orders. The only crewmember to leave the ship except the severely wounded
If any A-4 pilot could comment on the bomb release, it would be interesting
McCain’s later published book (and wiki) claim the errant rocket struck his aircraft, not that of pilot LCDR Fred White who was killed in the bomb blast caused by the single bomb released from McCain’s plane (not 2 bombs as claimed by McCain in his book) McCain’s aircraft was not initially struck by the rocket through he claims it was. The author cites deck camera film.
That aside, the last vote that had all my heart in it and not any nose holding was for Ronald Reagan's second term.

He said needed R&R so he hopped a helo flight to Saigon with a NYT reporter the day after while the fires were still burning and the dead were still missing
The Oriskany didn't accept him until after the initial accident report (signed off by Admiral Moorer, friend of Adm Jack McCain, Commander Naval Forces Europe)..the preliminary accident report said said the A-4 bomb that was dropped came off Fred White's plane .....pretty significant ... if actually fact and not conjecture.....since McCain's book much later claimed his aircraft was struck by the rocket and that caused his aircraft to release 2 bombs which sent the fire into a major conflagration
McCain spent the 3 months during the accident report period screwing around in Europe, not with his squadron, to which he never returned.
I found this article while trying to find the New York Times interview with McCain after the disaster, I was curious why McCain was interviewed in Saigon just 2 days after the Forrestal disaster - since McCain was not medically evacuated (was in fact, uninjured according to his own family)
“Sailors to the End” states that McCains aircraft was the one struck by the rocket and that is a big not historical fact
