I have never seen a good estimate of the number of black confederate soldiers during the war. I do not refer here to the large numbers of black men, both free and slave, who accompanied the confederate armies as teamsters, drovers, cooks, and other laborers. Those were numerous, and some may have occasionally picked up a rifle and fought. But they are a separate question: I refer here to the free black men who enlisted with their neighbors and served in confederate line units. This is a much smaller number, but there were some, and their story needs to be told as well.

The confederates had also begun to organize black units as a desperation measure at the end of the war, but that is also a separate story.
