The Upshot: The Trump Campaign’s Turning Point
MSN / The New York Times ^ | July 18, 2015 | Nate Cohn

Donald Trump’s surge in the polls has followed the classic pattern of a media-driven surge. Now it will follow the classic pattern of a party-backed collapse.

Mr. Trump’s candidacy probably reached an inflection point on Saturday after he essentially criticized John McCain for being captured during the Vietnam War. Republican campaigns and elites quickly moved to condemn his comments — a shift that will probably mark the moment when Trump’s candidacy went from boom to bust.

His support will erode as the tone of coverage shifts from publicizing his anti-establishment and anti-immigration views, which have some resonance in the party, to reflecting the chorus of Republican criticism of his most outrageous comments and the more liberal elements of his record.

His surge in the presidential polls began on June 16 when he declared his candidacy. Announcements of that type always yield a wave of media coverage, just as they did for candidates like Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio. So far this year, media attention from announcements has helped the best-known candidates by an average of six percentage points, with the effect degrading steadily afterward....

Big deal.

Benedict Arnold was a war hero.

McCain has done incalculable damage to the country.

yeah it’ll be interesting to see how many people support this comment about McCain. It needed to be said.

And to clarify, Trump didn’t criticize McCain for being captured, he was criticizing a culture that worships a POW as a hero - not exactly Audie Murphy stuff here....

If you spent the duration of the war at some Army post in New Jersey....serving chow to guys...you are a war-hero. That’s the flip side of this whole argument...whether you were reservist or active-duty...every single guy gets the title of war-hero. For the Spanish-American war, I had a relative who signed up a month after the announcement of war. He’d just finished up bootcamp and got his picture taken...when they announced the war was over. The picture got dragged around for years and years...with him noted as a ‘war-hero’. I think he was discharged from the Army roughly six weeks after the war ended, and other than seeing a portion of Texas....there’s not much else he could say.

The majority of Republican don’t like Trump. In a 14-way race, he only needs about 14% of the liberal fringe ti be in first place. That’s still a huge chunk who won’t vote for him. There’s no way the GOPe can convince a majority of Republican voters to back this liberal liar.

I don’t lower myself to watch trashy reality TV. How could someone want Kardashian TV trash to be president?

The Liberals are all getting giddy over this. As history has shown, they will soon be disappointed.

I hope that Trump is taking down the names of all the journalists who are writing this nonsense and twisting his words. Payback will be awesome!

You are spot on in your analysis!

Trump is in control of his own destiny because of who he is and what he believes.

Nice touch, Randy. Trump has beern the Invictus character since his first appearance on the world stage. He celebrates his mastership of his own destiny., as should we all. The saga of Trump is the story we all wish to have written about our own lives. He is Ole Blue Eyes, always doing it his way.

Oh, how they hate Trump. The kerfuffle between Trump and McLame is a great example of how all those who hate Trump are now piling on to twist his statements in the most extreme manner to denigrate him.

McLame is an interesting character in his own right. Those who have studied his honorable military service, find it to be a complex and a mixed story. His political life exemplifies the disgusting Washington politician who is a weasel, a man who claims to be a conservative when he runs for office and then abandons those principles after getting elected. His lackluster campaign for president was a absolutely total disappointment when he completely failed to take on the traitor Obama. In fact, he deliberately refused to call Obama out on his Communist background. He especially angered Trump recently when he outlandishly characterized American patriots as “crazies,” patriots who were principally his Arizona constituents. He has been a backstabber on immigration and many other issues. In short, he is an example of Washington politics at its worst.

Utter BS. I've got far more respect for Trump, who never served, than I do for McCain, who has brought dishonor on both himself and all of us who served in Vietnam. He flew an airplane, got shot down, surrendered to the enemy, and was captured. BFD.

I can match him medal for medal, except for any Air Medals he might have. He was no hero. I know some, and McCain doesn't fill the bill. He was complicit in our abandonment of our MIAs. For that alone, he should be drawn and quartered.
