I could have gone the VA disability route after 24 years of service and opted not to for a few reasons - mostly normal wear and tear vs service specific issues even though I could have taken some disability - didn't want them having extra control over my affairs.
I'm probably a few hundred a month shorter than I could have been but it looks like a worthy "investment" to not have opted to get a "bonus" each month.
I prefer to be considered as aging vs "disabled".
