A town near Barcelona has announced that it is putting its pigeons on contraceptives in order to reduce the growing population of feathered fiends.

The Catalan town of Badia del Vallès announced the plan via a statement on the town hall website.

"Every morning, three automatic dispensers will scatter the required dosage to the pigeon population," said the statement.

Each pigeon will be fed 10 grams of Ovistop, a product made of corn seeds covered in Nicarbazin, which acts as a contraceptive for the birds.

The first dispenser was installed on Monday July 13th near the town's Civil Guard headquarters, while the other two will be installed on school roofs next week.

The pigeons will be put on the birth control pill from July until December, the high season for pigeon breeding.

The pill is touted as being highly effective by town hall sources, who project that 80 percent of Badia’s pigeon population will have been eliminated within four to five years.

One pair of birds can produce 48 pigeons a year. . .

How do they ensure that the pigeons won’t OD?

Won’t reduce the demand for pigeon dishes amongst the illegals there?

Since the male will also be receiving the dose will they become feminized or start lactating? ;)

The pill is touted as being highly effective by town hall sources, who project that 80 percent of Badia’s pigeon population will have been eliminated within four to five years.

One added benefit to this besides limiting the bird’s reproduction is that birds that fail to fledge young in a nesting spot will change their nesting location.

So these pigeons may choose to relocate to a neighboring town.

Wow! Do they taste good?

Back in the early 1900’s a man could make a living selling pigeons for restaurts and grocery stores.

They were considers a step below pheasant or Guinea hens.

A friend of my parent’s hunted them for extra income and food.

As I remember his telling he would observe where the pigeons roosted at night and then after dark he go to where they roosted an simply climb up grab them and shove them in a sack.

IIRC, in the mid to late 1950s, there were ads touting raising pigeons as a way to make money. They ran in the same section as the ones with the guy getting sand kicked in his face for bodybuilding.

About the time pigeon was going out of fashion.

People still raise them but not so much for food as for show birds.

They can have remarkable plumage.

“corn seeds”?

Those must come from the middle of the corn fruit that you get from the corn tree.

One House or Senate RINO leader can produce even more pigeons.
