Pictures circulating online show an Egyptian military vessel engulfed in flames after a rocket attack by extremists operating on the Sinai peninsula.

Crew members were forced to jump overboard after the fire took hold on a ship owned by the country's navy.

The incident took place in the Mediterranean Sea close to Israel and the Gaza Strip, in the latest escalation of extremist-linked violence across North Africa.

Dramatic images appear to show a missile heading towards the warship before a ball of flames erupts and black smoke billows from the scene....

Question to the assembled wise old military heads of FReeperdom:

What sort of missile might ISIS have that they could learn, deploy and use that operates like the one in question?

From whence might that missile come?

Please speculate with some authority.

Russian sourced is my bet.

This is a “step up” in terms of capability.

It portends attacks from boats onto the Israeli mainland.

Might it have been an old Sagger wire guided Russian AT missile? Probably piles of those things over there.

Saggers are wire-guided and don’t like flying over water.

Something more modern like the Kornet could have done it. The bigger ATGMs would be pretty effective against the smallish patrol craft common in the Med.

I would say the source is probably Pakistan.
I don't think Russia, not right now.

Some type of shoulder mounted rocket, or rocket assist.
If a stinger can take out a helicopter why couldn't something of that type take out a boat?
Heat seeker, keying on the heat of the engine.
Even an old TOW manually guided missile might do, if the range is close enough.

I don’t think it’s the Russians, they support Sisi.

Silkworm? The Chinese copied the Russian Termit.

“Extremists”. That’s good. The Associated Press called these turds “militants”. The gerbalists just can’t bring themselves to use the “T” word.

There was way too much High Explosive in that hit.

Ive been digging into this story a bit today comparing footage of some of the most popular portable missle systems that would work in a scenario like this and anti aircraft systems are totally out of the picture. The warheads are designed to shred aircraft, not reinforced steel like the hull of a ship or a tank. Without more detail on the damage done to the ship, it’s impossible to tell.

Thanks to Youtube, we know they have US made TOW’s, Chinese HJ-8’s, Russian Kornet’s and AT-5 Konkurs.

Anti-tank? In that case it could be an older American TOW from Afghanistan.
What was the range. I'm not that familiar with this incident yet.

Who was in such an optimized position with obvious pre-knowledge of the event to catch the missile in flight?

Not sure of the range. I need to go back and read more. There’s video of ISIS and FSA using all of the anti tank missiles I listed earlier on YouTube. Pretty insane they have access to all this hardware.

These jihadi’s love to record and post their attacks and yell Allah Akbar a million times so we will likely see it at some point. The photo most of the news outlets are posting doesn’t tell us much. These portable anti tank systems can easily be deployed on a roof or inside a building and threaten coastal patrol vessels which could have serious implications for coastal patrols. I’m waiting to see the damage done to the ship but if two guys and an easily concealed, rapidly deployed weapon can cripple a billion dollar naval vessel... That’s big.

Heres a Stratfor article covering Anti tank missle use by FSA

https://www.stratfor.com/weekly/anti-tank-guided-missiles-pose-serious-threat#

Looks like TOW missiles are popular.
