we were awake after 9/11. but political correctness quickly asserted itself and we were not allowed to blame it on islam. then Bush went off to war in Afghanistan and Iraq and again, refused to name islam the problem. then we got suckered into wasting billions of $$$ trying our hand at nation building in a part of the world where only savages live. meanwhile, the forces of cultural marxism were busy confusing and manipulating the people into believing that this was all about neocons and Bush and the CIA framing the arabs for the attacks.
