Sheriff Mims Discusses New I.C.E. Program At Fresno Jail (ICE screening before release)

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims was featured on Fox & Friends early Thursday morning. She discussed her recent implementation of a pilot program to help reduce crime in Fresno County. Sheriff Mims joined Great Day with Kim Stephens and Kopi Sotiropulos shortly after the interview with the Fox News Channel to talk more about this program. The Sheriff partnered with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at the Fresno Jail. The program began June 22, 2015. Agents are stationed at the jail, monitoring undocumented immigrants coming into and leaving the facility. The agents are looking for "Level 1" and "Level 2" criminals who are undocumented immigrants. These are people who have either been convicted of violent crimes, or have an extensive criminal history. From there, undocumented immigrants may be transferred to a Federal prison.

Sheriff Mims said Harris County, Texas is the only other county in the nation to participate in a program like this.

She has a unique pilot program which is also being done in Harris County Texas. The ICE agents come to the local jail and screen criminals before releasing them.

Fresno Immigrant Youth in Action and California Immigrant Youth Justice Alliance demand an immediate halt to this new pilot program. This is a huge step in the wrong direction and is yet another example of how out of step the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department is with the rest of the country. While a growing number of jurisdictions move toward reducing collaboration with ICE, this new program does just the opposite.
