Netanyahu on Iran deal: The more you read it, the worse it gets ("filled with absurdities")
Times of Israel ^ | July 15, 2015, 8:50 am EDT | Avi Lewis

Inspections clause is farcical, sanctions snap-back clause is incomprehensible, and a major Iranian terror chief, Qassem Soleimani, has been removed from the terror list, PM protests

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that perusal of the previous day’s nuclear deal with Iran yields a picture that grows ever bleaker.

The agreement is “filled with absurdities,” Netanyahu said, scolding world leaders for caving in to Iran’s “charm offensive” and crediting Israel with leading the fight against an Iranian bomb.

He called on the Knesset to present a united front in the fight against the “bad in every respect” pact. “The agreement that was signed in Vienna is not the final word. We will continue to fight,” Netanyahu pledged.

Iran and the world powers signed an agreement Tuesday in Vienna that mandates the Islamic Republic scale back some of its nuclear capabilities in exchange for a rollback of economic sanctions.

“When we examine this agreement — which is bad in every aspect — when we read this agreement, the picture becomes more bleak and we discover it’s filled with absurdities,” Netanyahu said.

“For example, the agreement gives Iran 24 days’ [notice] before an inspection; it’s like giving a criminal organization that produces drugs a 24-hour warning before performing a search,” he said.

“In addition, the sanction snap-back mechanism is so complicated and serpentine that one needs a PhD to understand it. One clause creates a huge incentive to invest in Iran because it says that the reinstatement of sanctions will not apply to agreements that have [already taken place]. Another section includes the people that were removed from the sanctions list, one of them being Qassem Soleimani, head of Iran’s global terror arm. It is absurd, terror [meets] nuclear [power],” he said, referring to the commander of Iran’s elite Quds force.

According to Netanyahu, Western leaders were too easily beguiled by the Iranian regime, and if not for Israel’s efforts, Tehran would already possess a bomb.

“There is a willingness in the West to accept despotic regimes and seek peace at any price. Not all of them have internalized the lessons of history. Even today, the powers are won over by a charm offensive. I am not saying that we are in 1938 for two reasons; firstly, back then, no precedent existed for what was to occur, while today that [precedent] exists; secondly, today we have a state, while then we didn’t, and its purpose is to to act against those that threaten it,” Netanyahu said.

“If not for the efforts made by Israel, Iran would have already had the ability to arm itself with nuclear bombs. We exposed the Iranian issue on the international stage. We led the implementation of biting sanctions that brought Iran to the negotiating table. We set before Iran a red line on the issue of uranium enrichment which it has not yet crossed,” he said.

“One who speaks truth about this agreement is the president of Iran, who said that Iran has achieved all its objectives,” Netanyahu said, referring to President Hassan Rouhani who said Tuesday following the deal that “all the four objectives have been achieved.”

“We are not committed to this agreement and will continue to oppose it. For existential [threats] there is no coalition or opposition. We need a united front to ensure our survival,” Netanyahu said.

It’s clear that the agreement has no way to enforce the already feeble obligations of Iran under this agreement. Under this agreement Iran gets everything and gives nothing.

What I find interesting is the Israeli leftist opposition is united with Bibi on how bad this agreement is for Israel. Waiting for Hillary to opine knowing that liberal Jewish political support in the US in now in play.

When are the calls for retraction of Obama’s Nobel prize going to start?

I’m kind of compelled to a contrarian few.

If the Iranians were really close to nukes, Obama would want a deal so as not to be at the table when to first test goes off. With that Obama knows the media will dutifully praise him. (WIN for Obama)

If that above is true. Obama knows the Israeli’s might well take matters into their own hand, conducting an air strike that will set Iran back years. Obama will condemn this air strike. ( WIN for Obama)

With the Israeli air strike, the particulars of deal will no longer matter. Obama and the media will decry that Obama’s deal was never given a chance. ( WIN for Obama)

With all that Obama will punish Israel which is high on his agenda. ( WIN for Obama)

Otherwise, what if, Israel doesn’t strike. Is this deal soo sweet because the unspoken agreement is Iran has agree not to test a nuke. ie: Obama to Iran: listen you can have it, just don’t test or acknowledge it (like Israel’s policy, no tests, never acknowledged). (WIN for Obama)

The second that happens is the second Obama declares war on Israel, and that seems to be the “endgame”.

I hope Bibi can get his Iron dome working at 100%.

At this point until Jan 2017 if iran launches at us with a ICBM, I wouldn’t blame Bibi if he decided not to shoot it down, if I was in his position, I would probably do the same as my back would be hurting from the blade still lodged in it....

Playing Obama’s advocate here....

Unless Obama knows that they are roughly 1 year away from a ICBM launch of a nuke warhead....

Then I would be doing everything I could to stay out of Iran’s way by agreeing to an agreement that would make inspections impossible and not hinder the irianian development.

Why?

Well imagine that Hillary and the GOP contender in the summer of 2016 and it looks like hillary is gonna lose badly, then all of a sudden, BAM, Iranain Nuke attack, then O-BAM-A, Emeregency powers act kicks in and Election is cancelled....

Obama’s 3rd term is ushered de-facto in with a hint of Radioactive Strontinum in the air over the Continental US...

Odd of this scenario ar probably 1 in 100 in my opinion...

Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Israel, along with many silent partners in the Gulf (hell maybe even ISIS).

Another possibility: odinga plans to detonate one or more nukes in the US to enable his “third term.” He is setting up Iran to be the fall guy. Odinga is evil and capable of anything.

I DON'T SEE ANY THREAD ON THE PRESIDENTIAL PRESS CONFERENCE NOW ON TV.

Is there one? I see a thread on "Giant African Snails", but nothing on what's on TV now regarding a critical issue and a dunderhead president droning on and on.

Probably plenty of folks who don't know how to start a thread have comments to share regarding the press conference, as do I.

If there is such a thread, please post a link. Thanks.

BTW, this farce presser should be listed with a link in FR's "Breaking News" column (a column which, sadly, usually consists of "Stale News" these days,

I’d rather not listen but this is important I think to hear....because what he’s saying and what the deal is are two different things...but hearing him at least we know the twist he’s putting on this.

I read a lot of the deal last night....there’s no way Iran will be reporting etc. all they’ve listed...let alone abide by the terms otherwise. They’re are so many loop holes Iran can wiggle through.

Not to mention .... there’s no way IEAA is going to monitor all this when some of them are Irans Allies. Like asking the wolf to guard the henhouse.

So Hearing him all he’s doing is making this palatible to the public...he’s not on mark with ALL he should be informing the public.....Just eat his icecream.

If the Islamic enemy agent posing as our President declared war on Israel for trying to defend itself, I really wonder if our Military would go along with that because there is NOBODY that hates this mofo Obama more than our own vets. I really think a mass mutiny would occur.

I watched the whole thing. That's why I'm sorry there wasn't a thread on this sorry spectacle in breaking news or elsewhere.

Watching the Liar-in-Chief drone on and on with his soothing propaganda, all I could think of was the famous quote from Longfellow..."Flail On, O Drip of State".

I watched the Obama’s sale’s pitch and he tried to act cool, calm and collected, until Major Garrett got his Islamic goat.

Viable alternative was “walking away!”

Iran sticking to any agreement, good, or completely bad like this one, is about as likely as Bill Clinton sticking to his wedding vows....or John Kerry getting into Mensa.
