Locals here like to say that everything is bigger in Texas, and that will certainly apply to the state capitals newest planned residential tower. At 685 feet in height, the 58-story building, named the Independent, is slated to be the tallest predominantly residential building west of the Mississippi River.
Aside from its height, the Independent illustrates a notable change in the Lone Star state: a shift away from a long-standing tradition of residents and developers embracing the wide open spaces with sprawl construction and spacious homes. By contrast, the Independent will stack nearly a million square feet of space in 370 condominiums and a smattering of ground-floor retail onto a mere 1.7-acre site.
Even more surprising, more than 90% of the condos have been reserved during the first week of presales even though construction wont actually begin until later this year. A joint venture of Austin companies Constructive Ventures and Aspen Heights plans to announce financing details for the $300 million-plus project in the next few weeks, aiming for completion in 2018.

Sad, really.
They will move to suburbs and single family dwelling homes as soon as they can.
No gracias-—I’ll take a small home on a little land to mess around with. They can keep the tall, vertical birdhouses for those so inclined.

The locust-lobbyist need a new nest after sucking Albany an Sacramento dry!
Yeah—we retired to the sleepy little town of Lakeway, which is not too far from Austin, on Lake Travis.
In the 14 years we’ve been here, Austin has boomed—with the awful traffic pollution, crime—what have you. It’s hard to tell where Austin stops and Lakeway begins.
You can run, but you can’t hide-—LOL!
Surprised the Austin leftist would allow such a monstrosity, the Greenie contingent must be pisses. Lets see how many units will be for the low income per Dear leaders demands, yeah right, buwaahahaha.
Keep Austin Gentrified.
It looks like about 2700 sf per condo resident. Set aside 10% - 15% for mechanical use and public areas, you still have a condo building where the average size is larger than most Austin single family homes.
No quite as egalitarian as the libs want us to believe.
Yeah, that'll work.
Aw c’mon, the Jenga Tower will be cool.
Besides, they have a lot of deposits on units, but no funding announced. I’ll be surprised if it is ever built.
Btttt
They are building, though nowhere near as tall, multi use properties all over SoCal. Retail on the bottom and living on the floors above, crowded, expensive chicken coops! Traffic congestion, parking issues, lack of privacy.......All the things I look for in a home.
How many “affordable” or Section 8 units will be required?
