The new owners of a 21-unit, low-rent apartment complex in Healdsburg are evicting all the mostly Latino tenants with plans to fix it up and in some cases more than double the rents, prompting a community outcry as well as highlighting the challenge of providing affordable housing in a hot real estate market.
“This town is built on the backs of those people, and those people who trusted me for 30 years to teach their children,” said Judy Sanderson, a retired teacher and self-described “privileged white woman” who said it feels like the new owners are “targeting Hispanic families.”
Laura Arreguin said, “As a Mexican, as a Latina, I love beautiful surroundings. I feel discriminated against.”
Mayor Shaun McCaffery said Drake Property’s language “sounded blatantly racist” considering the overwhelming Latino makeup of the apartment complex.
Peter Supino, the head of Drake Property Group, said when his company issued the statement last year “we had no idea who was in that building.”
Supino said the apartment complex, built in 1974, has been totally neglected by a number of previous owners.
“All 21 dishwashers haven’t worked for years,” he said, adding that the roofs are falling in, the ceilings have asbestos and balconies are falling apart. It is a huge health and safety hazard and the complex will need an estimated $1.5 million in renovations, according to Supino, who added “we probably saved tenants’ lives.”
He said the residents were treated fairly, given a legal, 60-day notification to be out by the end of this month and in some instances were paid $500 to leave sooner. All will be given a right to return, he said, and “hopefully we can bring back a couple that were there.”

None of them would demand restaurants sell food at varying prices depending on one’s income or ethnicity yet apartments must be rented at below market value to suit a load of wetbacks and their misguided sympathizers?

It seems to me that Trump is REALLY setting a great table for Cruz down the line. He is striking gold with his stand on illegal immigration, and Cruz is the only republican who has said Trump is right to focus on this issue. If/when Trump gets tired of this and pulls out, Cruz will be in the position to snag all these voters.

We are well along on the slippery slope, where any job or housing held by a preferred minority basically stays in that group’s hands permanently.
BTW, they DO demand restaurants sell food at varying prices with a twist: Who is paying for it? The “preferred minorities” you see as consumers often aren’t spending a dime of their OWN money - they are spending OUR money.

There’s the problem, Headsburg “trusted her” for 30 years to educate a bunch of illegal alien children.
We don’t need no stinkin’ dishwashers. We don’t use plates anyway, pendajo.
Asbestos in the ceilings and falling balconies? I say, if they want them, let them have them.
Improving one’s lifestyle and health apparently isn’t a concern of the great unwashed.
As for any decent people in this complex, get out now but ask the new owners for a better relocation deal. We did that while I was VP of our tenant’s organization.
We got decent relocation money (for moving expenses, etc). Got priority housing for our three cancer patients, two of whom were dying), got additional longterm housing for the elderly (moved from one section to the last to be renovated, which took several years).
A decent company will help you and in the end, you may be able to work out a deal to stay in your old, but newly renovated unit.
Try it. We did and were able to help many people who had to move.
Don't bet on it. Sounds like an idea that the Lefties would just love to pay back the "oppressed" favored people. It would be another redistribution program.
