The e-mail left many parents at the private Catholic school upset and confused. The well-respected director of religious education had just been fired.
Nell Stetser, principal of Waldron Mercy Academy, an elementary school in Merion, sent the e-mail Friday to say that Margie Winters was out of a job after eight years.
The reasons were confidential, Stetser wrote.
But the "context" she went on to offer included clues to what the school saw as a problem: Winters is in a same-sex marriage.
Stetser praised Winters for her "amazing contributions" to the school.
"In the Mercy spirit, many of us accept life choices that contradict current Church teachings," she wrote, "but to continue as a Catholic school, Waldron Mercy must comply with those teachings."
Winters married her wife in Boston in 2007, seven years before a federal judge struck down as unconstitutional Pennsylvania's 18-year-old law banning gay marriage.
The Supreme Court on June 26, in a 5-4 ruling, said same-sex marriage is a constitutional right.
Winters said she and her wife "kept a really low profile" about their relationship at the school.
"I actually had a conversation with the principal a few weeks after I was hired to say, how should I handle this," said Winters, adding that she was advised that she could be open about her life with the faculty but to avoid discussing it with students' parents.

She was "married" illegally for eight years (unless she did so out-of-state), and did so before she accepted the job offer.
I’d like to know what subject she taught.
Oh, sorry, it says director of religious education. That is not good. You cannot have a director of religious education that does not understand your religion, can you?
anyone who thinks this is a coincidence is not paying attention.
there are stealth homosexuals working in all sorts of religious establishments waiting for a chance to cause twitter/social media/MSM outrage once they “come out” and get fired by those religious establishment.
this is the artillery barrage before the invasion.
they want to discredit and mock religion (mostly just Christianity) for its rules about homosexuality. the millennial SJWs lap this stuff up.
it’s also about “get rich quick” lawsuits.
‘she was advised that she could be open about her life with the faculty but to avoid discussing it with students’ parents’
Ahhhh, the hypocrisy! I wish I knew which parochial schools actually hold to their religious tenets and which don’t.
“...that contradict current Church teaching.”
Current?
Come on principal don’t be squishy, don’t confuse students and parents that this may change.
Ok, let me see if I am reading things right:
(1) people don’t want ‘same-sex’ marriage, so they turn to religion saying it’s a sin....
(2) ‘same-sex’ marriage passes and now because religion is doing something about it, that’s a sin???...
Sounds like “weakness and ambiguity” were there when a lesbian with a “wife” was hired to teach religion and told to just not tell the parents.
So was she quietly teaching the gay version of the Bible?
The principal encouraged this mess and should be fired too.

Praised for her “amazing contributions” to the school. Yeah, I’ll bet.

If the school had Catholic based rules for high character for employees at the school, this is what happens and should happen.
Same with a heterosexual teacher who is divorced or who has sex outside of wedlock or who is a thief, killer, etc.
In reality, though, this woman was not “married” as the Bible defines marriage. She was in a civil union recognized by the State which is different than what most churches or Christians call marriage or holy matrimony. So, she was fired for engaging in homosexual sex. If she was identifying herself as a homo but did not engage in homo sex, she’d probably still have her job.
RE: If the school had Catholic based rules for high character for employees at the school, this is what happens and should happen.
This is the problem with the SCOTUS decision on gay marriage.
They have now appointed unto themselves what does and does not constitute “high character”.
If this case were to go to court, a liberal judge can always respond asying: “According to the Supreme Court, gay marriage IS marriage, who are you to say that this is not high character like all other married people?”
She probably had someone inside that advised her to keep it quiet at the start (Pulled them in when they were in a bind per the position). Scrap the principal down or close the school. This is why, even if the church community tithes and make sure their children attend and volunteer... you can’t take anything from the government. Now, even private Christian schools will be forced to put this hiring in place... thus preventing the practice of Christianity by the US Supreme Court.
As we know, it wasn’t just Sodom and Gomorrah, but three other cities... and judges were behind it. What has been will be; There’s nothing new under the sun.
Jude 1:4 “For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.”
A concept which is just too difficult for many sheeple to understand . . . Doesn't her "right" to a job mean more than her ability to actually do the job?

Unless the school takes funding from the Local, State or Federal government (idiots, if they do), I don’t think the courts have the power to dictate religion to Catholics nor to force association with non-Catholics. This woman is no longer a Catholic...she should be formally excommunicated from the church in addition to being fired from her job for breaking the moral aspects of her contract with the school. Civil disobedience is the only other choice for the school because they can not serve two masters; one evil and the other, God.
I saw that movie years ago, but I don’t remember how they depicted that the two teachers were lovers. How was that shown?
“who are you to say that this is not high character like all other married people?
If asked that my a humanist, anti-constitutional judge, I would say that it is the Bible that defines my morality and standards for character in my life and in my standards for employees.
It is my first amendment right to practice my faith; not the government’s faith or the judge’s faith. And, the same could be asked of the judge: what gives you the right to define morality and character for my church and church school?
It really wasn't. Which is what made it a fascinating and slightly uncomfortable movie at times.
The two girls never said as much. Yet sometimes they eluded to it...but never said so definitively. It was very well written.
The story mostly centered on what the little girl said she saw...and we don't know if it was true or not. We are left to our own devices and perception to glean our own truth.
