Just a year ago, Russian journalist Vladimir Yakovlev was one of Moscow's most influential media figures.
Today, he lives a quiet life in Tel Aviv and has swapped his Russian passport for an Israeli one.
Yakovlev, the founder of the respected Kommersant publishing house and the Snob magazine, belongs to a new wave of disillusioned Russian Jews deserting their country for the relative stability of Israel.
"The big problem with Russia, and the main reason why I left, is the fact that our value system was destroyed," he says. "Life in Russia has turned into Russian roulette. Every morning you turn the roulette wheel, you never know what is going to happen to you."

Spooked by Russia's actions in Ukraine and by the increasingly stringent punishments for anyone deemed critical of the Kremlin, Russians of Jewish descent have been fleeing in droves over the past 18 months.

According to Israeli authorities, as many as 4,685 Russian citizens relocated to Israel in 2014 -- more than double than in any of the previous 16 years.

The fact that Jews are leaving England and France because of antisemitism doesn't mean they aren't leaving Russia for the same reason. The difference is, in The NeoSoviet Empire® nothing happens without Big Brother Beefcakes say-so.
It's disgusting to see the moral equivalence type of posts that now appear on FReeRepublic whenever someone tells the truth about Putin. It's been the tactic of the Left for a long time, but now it is used by the Putinistas, as does the Putin-approved media in Russia, to suggest that Putin's evil is no different than the West. I get why Putin's people do it. They've rebranded from Communists to Ultranationalists. But as for any American conservative, I can only conclude that they're shallow and ignorant.

It’s disgusting how many pro-dictator types we have on FReeRepublic. If you’re against Obama because he’s a left wing tyrant who ignores our laws and constitution, why favor a former communist and pseudo conservative opportunist like Putin? Apparently, they think if Americans can be duped by Obama they want to be duped by another fraud. And it’s as if they’re too stupid to realize they’re being used and don’t really know what conservative principles are. I cannot figure out why they’re allowed to spout pro-Putin claptrap on here.
Has anyone ever thought that perhaps the Jews are leaving Russia because it is becoming more and more an Orthodox Christian nation? The Jews here in the States have been instrumental in taking away many Christian symbols here. Our schools now have ‘winter’ break instead of Christmas vacation, ‘spring’ break instead of Easter vacation, ‘holiday’ trees in public places that would even allow them, etc. Jews just don’t like Christianity in their faces.
Not that I’m defending Putin here (I do that enough elsewhere), but the numbers here don’t seem to match what’s in Wikipedia:

...and he does, conveniently, leave out the first decade of Russian emigration, which was MUCH HIGHER than even his numbers.
It’s also worth noting, for the people here that think Putin is a re-incarnation of Stalin, that Jews are still free to leave Russia, unlike during the Communist times.
Finally, as others have pointed out - wearing a Yamaha in France and many other Western countries (including parts of the US) almost certainly means you’ll get your head bashed in. For Jews that DO NOT try to take on Putin politically, I seriously doubt we are in a position to say they would have a better life in the West (particularly France or Sweden), versus staying in Russia.
