The First Amendment gives people the freedom to practice whatever religion they choose. It is a basic, fundamental right.

As Governor Palin explains, the government should always offer citizens space to exercise their beliefs, for the good of the country. (Sarah Palin Channel)

Religious Liberty - Bill of Rights 02

"There’s a reason why religious liberty is our first liberty in the Bill of Rights."

Religious Liberty - Girls praying

"It’s the liberty that most fundamentally protects who we are."

"It’s a liberty not just of the mind, but of the soul itself."

Religious Liberty - Sarah Palin 02

"Religious freedom helped to bind us together as a nation by giving us room to do what we believe we must."

Religious Liberty - Passover Seder

"A good government gives people the space that they need to follow their conscience."

Religious Liberty - Sarah Palin 03

"When the government doesn’t give this space, civil disobedience follows."

Religious Liberty - Apostles

"This is an ancient truth going all the way back to the first century, when the apostles declared to the rulers of the day that they must obey God, not man."

Religious Liberty - Sarah Palin 04

"But when man demands obedience over God, or over another person’s conscience, well then governments out of whack.  It’s out of balance."

Religious Liberty - Sarah Palin 09

"There are some today who scoff at religious liberty."

"They believe that man has all the knowledge that he needs to make the world great."

Religious Liberty - Sarah Palin 08

"No man is greater than God."

"No man is wiser than God."

"We all need the freedom to seek and discern God’s will for ourselves."

Maybe it's just the semantics, but I take exception to this statement. The government doesn't have to "offer citizens space" for ANYTHING. The government doesn't own that space to begin with, and thus, can't OFFER us something as though we're paltry vagabonds looking for a deal.

WE are the owners of that space, and the Constitution vouchsafes us the free exercise of our beliefs not because governments are benevolent or generous -- history has repeatedly proven otherwise -- but because we are born free men. And one of the freedoms we're born with is that of individual liberty.

I'm sure Sarah Palin knows that, and that this was simply an odd way of phrasing it.

And yet, there are those who take the “freedom of religion” to mean “freedom FROM religion”, and these are the worst offenders of public taste, the ones who demand that NO show of anything remotely like any kind of religious symbolism be displayed, in the public square or ANYWHERE.

Guilty conscience, maybe, and they don’t want to think about what is waiting for them if this talk of an afterlife and divine retribution ISN’T all just blather and superstition.
