You're exactly right. The wife and I had discussed moving to another country after retirement, but can't leave the kids and grandkids.
Decided to stock up and shelter in place instead.... ;-)

Ms. N managed to hate every place I took her to look, finally admitted she couldn't leave So Cal.
Six years later I'm too old and worn to keep pressing it.
As to being tough on the kids, when she and her youngest finally got down to the brass tacks she exiled him to a place about 40 miles from my original first choice.
At least it seems to have been a good move for him.
