Tanked-up Ukranian troops are crammed into small metal cages as a punishment for getting drunk. Video footage of the soldiers being shoved into the cages to sober up in eastern Ukraine has been published online. The men are forced to sit on the floor of the metal enclosure as it is not high enough for them to stand. The disgraced men are only released when they have sobered up. War reporter Andrei Tsaplienki explained the reason these soldiers were punished so harshly. 'In some army units, alcoholism has come to the level of an epidemic,' he said. 'So, radical measures are needed. An army source said: 'Drinking in the army is a big problem, even greater now there is a ceasefire. 'There is nothing for the men to do so they drink vodka. 'They are all used to drink in their civilian lives and they are just carrying the habit on, but even more so because they are bored.'

This is why I didn’t sign up for the Ukrainian Army.

Russia doesn't have enough cages to do this to their own drunken soldiers.

This is from a UK newspaper. Are its former enablers souring on the Kiev crowd?

I suspect it pretty much sucks to be a Ukrainian soldier about now, but Eastern European men and vodka are a routine combination, plus I'll bet many are not career or professional military, but recent conscripts or volunteers much closer to civilian routine and not trained up to military discipline.
They certainly don't have good examples in their civilian government cadre or their Fascist/Socialist political parties and movements.
The comments are interesting.

This was normal for the Red Army and remains so in the armed forces of much of the XUSSR.
