Navy weighs having Marines hitch a ride on foreign warships

The Navy is weighing whether to have Marines hitch a ride on foreign warships, citing a shortage of U.S. vessels due to recent budget cuts -- raising bipartisan security concerns about the leverage this could give other countries.

A key concern is whether a warship host nation could deny Marines permission to come ashore.

"Ceding our amphibious ships to other countries -- it's almost silly and I can't believe it is even an option for the Navy," said Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., who served as a Marine in Iraq. "Now we are going to have to ask other countries, much less financially stable countries than America, to loan us their ships so that we can base our Marines on their ships. It's almost embarrassing."

The Navy currently has 30 amphibious transport ships to carry Marines, but estimates it would need 38 to cope with rising crises across North Africa. It won't reach that number until 2028 under current budget constraints.

Our Congress is largely responsible for this.

Seriously folks, we’re getting down to the wire here.

I will say this though. Congress brought us to this point. Obama couldn’t have done it alone. Frankly, I blame him less.

Congress has essentially become an enemy of the people.

Foreign vessels from where? Nobody in Europe has a fraction of the amphibious lift that the U.S. does so I hardly think they have any ships to spare.

The money is needed to provide welfare, food stamps, medical care and other handouts to millions of illegal aliens, bums, loafers, breed sows and other democrat voters.

I can understand why Americans would not be comfortable with this, but I’m also sure Australia would be willing and eager to help if we could.

What about that arrogant pos occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave? He is the the one who wants to get rid of our military power. Don’t put the blame on Congress

We should have our own amphibious ships but taking care of North Africa?

Sorry but that does that is a fool’s errand.

Which is appropriate.

I wouldn’t be so quick to blame the Congress on this.

There were MAJOR design issues with the San Antonio Class landing ships. The Marines also decided on a major redesign of the Wasp Class assault carriers to enhance their aviation capacity. Then changed their minds, but not before being committed to the three America Class ships.

And let’s not forget the money thats going into the F-35 program. Which is probablyba good thing, but still a money suck.

There is an alternative to using foreign ships: long term forward deploy the amphibs, Blue/Gold crew them (so two crews for each ship that are flown out and back from them on alternating schedules) and do the same for the Marine components as well. It’ll wear the ships out faster, of course ...
