To this day the North doesn't understands the South. Southerners tend as a group to retain "republic" thinking and ideals. The concept of states having authority over its people with the FedGov™ limited to international affairs is not alien to the South. It is ingrained here.

OTH this kind of thinking does not seem to occur above the Mason_Dixon. It isn't taught it is not even a concept. This makes the South a perplexing enigma to Yankees. And to some Freepers also.
