The Russian Security Council made a statement, according to which the elements of the missile defense systems that will be deployed in Poland and Romania pose potential threat to Russia, and therefore will become targets for the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. It was stated by the Deputy Security Council Secretary Yevgeny Lukyanov on Wednesday, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to the Russian media.
"They'd better think of something else, for example, Poland, Romania. Deployment of missile defense units, launcher installations that are really targeted on our strategic nuclear forces is a problem for them," Lukyanov said, adding that these countries "will automatically become our goals."
He said that if Poland and Romania liked to "be the targets because of the U.S. weapons systems," it was their choice.
Lukyanov believes no one party to the conflict will win, and someone will appear to be in between. "And they may be in between. If this position is understandable and acceptable for them, if it is the basis of their allied commitments, I can not comment on this," he said.
Earlier, the Pentagon announced that the U.S. Army was ready to ensure the deployment of high alert forces in the NATO countries bordering Russia within 48 hours.
