China busts gangs smuggling 40-year-old meat

Chinese authorities have broken up an international smuggling ring that was trying to sell chicken wings and pork, some of it more than 40 years old.

The smugglers reportedly bought cheap meat overseas and brought it into the country via Vietnam. While traveling this circuitous route, the meat thawed and was refrozen several times before it finally reached the market.

“The products fully filled an entire compartment. It was smelly, and I nearly threw up when I opened the door,” Zhang Tao, a government official, told the China Daily.

It could be legally shipped to the US from plants inspected only by the Chinese, with no country of origin labeling.

I would prefer to never, ever eat any food from China, including American raised stuff sent to China for processing. Yuck!

Vintage meat! That was a Premier Cru year! Aged meat is better. Except for beaujolais meat.

There's a place in WI selling off 20 year old cheese. Much sought after, given the TVM of a wheel of cheese that old.

I cannot begin to imagine the tummy aches that 40 year old meat would have caused. It’s not even practical, let alone humane. At a certain point, even a crook should realize the value of your ‘booty’ has depreciated dramatically. If you kill or sicken too many people in your region, the survivors will begin connecting the dots. I guess.

Aged cheddar is amazing. However even 5-10 year old cheddar is very, very, sharp in taste. I cannot imagine 20+ year old.

China does have a dish know as the “century egg” aka “hundred-year egg” aka “thousand-year egg” aka “millennium egg” that’s usually no more that a couple of months old, so you might be on to something.

My dog would eat the heck out of 40 year old meat, until he puked. Then, a few minutes later, after we both have a good laugh, he’d eat the puke and ask for more chiggen. (He can’t say “chicken).

Better safe than sorry. A year or so ago, pine nuts from China were knocking taste buds for a metallic tasting loop, lasting anywhere from hours to a month or more.

Look up "pine nut mouth".
