MOSCOWThousands of protesters rallied near the presidential residence in the capital of Armenia in the South Caucasu in the first shock wave of discontent over economic hardship sparked by recession in regional heavyweight Russia.
Undeterred by police batons and water cannons used to disperse protests earlier in the day, when police detained more than 230 protesters, mostly young people waving Armenian flags marched toward the presidents residence in Yerevan on Tuesday evening before halting in front of rows of riot police clad in body armor and holding shields.
Sanctions over Russias role in Ukraine, including restrictions renewed by the European Union on Monday, have exacerbated Russias economic downturn but also damaged the economies of many former Soviet states, which still have close ties with Moscow.

At least somebody fights back....unlike in America where our Constitution has been shredded with little more than a whimper.
That’s partially a function of how spread out this country is. We could also attribute it to how rich still we are. If you think about the spatial issue, that can’t be understated. A quick look at Wikipedia shows that Armenia has 3 million people. 1 million of those live in the capital. If they want to protest against the president, they just talk to a friend after “Armenian Studies” class, hop on the bus, and are in front of the president’s palace in 20 minutes with 10,000 other protestors. Feedback loops are tightened and real-time social networks can move quickly.
America has 350,000,000 people with no city being more important than 100 others. When we plan a large, visible form of protest it has to be weeks in advance, we have to take of work, restructure our entire lives, and hope others will join us. If we do a local protest, we know it will be thin. The spontaneity that fuels movements can’t take hold when everything has to be carefully planned and worked into schedules.
What we need here is are strong leaders with delineated objectives, rewards, understanding of the enemy, and how to defeat them before any mass movement can get going.
Paranoid Russians already see American CIA hand here as well and their media is already turning negative on the protests. If you weren’t familiar with “Armenian nazis” yet, you soon will be.
