To Improve Street Safety, San Francisco Bans Cars From Turning
The Atlantic Citylab ^ | June 22 2015 | Eric Jaffe

There are all sorts of things a city can do in the service of safer streets, from reducing speed limits to making room for bike lanes to handing out gift cards to law-abiding drivers. San Francisco just added another strategy to the list: restricting turns.

The move is part of a package of changes called the Safer Market Street plan—a subset of San Francisco’s broader Vision Zero initiative—that recently won the unanimous approval of city officials. Under the new rules, private cars will have limited chances to turn onto Market Street for a mile-long stretch between 3rd and 8th streets. SFMTA documents show that a total of 14 turns will be eliminated from the grid:

This might actually be a ploy to stop Uber, mentioned at the bottom.

And if we all stayed home, there would be fewer traffic accidents. Then, the SF City Council would decry the increase in home accidents, and probably ban getting out of bed. I think what they really did was to unanimously decree that San Franciscans are seriously stupid and a danger to everyone around them.

And, J. Edgar Hoover insisted that his personal driver make no left turns.

Allow NO turns at all. Pretty soon all cars will have left town. Problem solved. SFO is back to the stone age where it seems to want to be.

Knowing SF, this sounds like a way to let the cyclists run free.

I’ve noticed a push over the last year or two to discourage people from making left hand turns.

It’s rather comical. My father taught me, when I turned 16 in 1970, to time my left turns to match oncoming traffic so I don’t have to come to a complete stop, risking being rear ended. Fact is, there are so many unskilled drivers on the road that a lot of them should not, in fact, be making left hand turns. Whenever I’m on my motorcycle, I cringe at an oncoming car either slowing with no turn signal or with their left signal on.

UPS only makes right turns.

If it's San Francisco they'll be forced to make only left turns.

Totally forgot about that site.

A bunch of us were banned by some fat lesbo femiNazi mod for having the nerve to disagree with the idea of letting boys that think they are girls use the female restrooms in schools.

No problem. SF is the Prius capital of the world.

Vision Zero initiative. Appropriate name.
This should be good for those businesses in that area.
With no customers the owners can relax and not worry about shoplifters......

“The idea is to reduce the number of conflict points between drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists on the busy corridor”

I bet this was done because of bike riders!
They could just adjust the lights.
A intersection where I lived had many traffic accidents until the city adjusted the timing of the lights.

You’re not far off. There’s an active movement in NorCal to ban pavement repairs, the theory being that the roads will eventually become undriveable and vehicle owners will then self-ban.

So many idiots on the road. I like the people who are making a left turn while drifting right into the next lane.
