Convicted murderer Jodi Arias is required to pay the family of the man she killed in 2008 roughly $30,000 in restitution charges, a Phoenix judge ruled Monday.
The family of Travis Alexander, who Arias, 34, was convicted of shooting and then stabbing almost 30 times, had petitioned for approximately $100,000 in order to reimburse their travel and lodging expenses during her lengthy trial hearings.
But Judge Sherry Stephens ordered the smaller payment because the family didn’t provide all of the receipts for their costs, according to Arias’ attorney, Jennifer Willmott. The family may not end up getting the funds back anyways, Willmott noted.
"In the past, my experience has been that victims are unlikely to get the money when somebody has been sent to prison for so long because they don't have the ability to make it," Willmott said. "Eventually she'll be able to get a job making 10, 20 cents an hour so they can take money from that, but it's very small."
Two websites devoted to raising funds for an appeal of Arias’ life sentence without possibility of release won’t necessarily pick up the tab either, Willmott noted in a press conference after the hearing Monday. Neither the victim’s family nor the convicted killer appeared at the session.
Prosecutors say Arias committed the bloody act after she caught wind of Alexander’s impending trip to Mexico with another woman.
I thought the “Son of Sam” law prevented murderers from profiting from their deeds. Arizona may not have one.

That law was ruled unconstitutional.
Arias ought to be awaiting execution, and she would be, were it not for the amateur death penalty activist that somehow made it on to the jury. That one woman sank the whole sentencing process.
Authorities should classify her art supplies as contraband.
