Because their traditional market is shrinking and they’re going out of business. Meanwhile places that serve food that tastes good, and is sometimes even healthy, are doing well.

Convenience stores are consistently out selling fast food places in food that is faster and in many cases better. I’ve been grabbing a chicken biscuit at a Kangaroo store. It’s $1.59, good, crispy and filling. Lunch at about 25% of the cost at a McDonald’s. (I pack my own drinks.)

I couldn’t find the article stating the percentages of change in gas station food vs. fast food restaurants, but here is a related article. (This guy’s operation is much more elaborate than the ones I’ve seen. Mostly it’s pizza or chicken.)

FWIW, with just the few changes they've already made around here (employees who are pleasant and competent, better chicken, more lettuce with the sandwich, some less expensive beverage choices), there's an increase in business.

A lot of people will return to McDs if they offer a reasonably healthy, reasonably priced meal in a pleasant environment.

That's how McDs started out. Back then, a hamburger on a white bun, fries, and a shake were considered healthy.
