Son possessed it illegally because SC law says anyone convicted of a felony or awaiting trial for a felony shall not possess a firearm.
It is important to stress to anyone caling for tighter gun control laws this was an illegal firearm. Not only was he awaiting trial for a felony drug charge he is said to be an addict.

From what I have read of the SC law (NOT a legal mind, I may have misinterpreted the legal mumbo jumbo) it appears anyone given a firearm as a gift in SC is under same legal requirements as one who purchases a firearm.

Not sure of all the circumstances on this, but there is a gift exemption. A straw purchase is when an ineligible person gives and eligible the money for the purchase. If his dad bought it for him it was as a gift, that’s legal
