A Lack of Trust

Neither Donald Trump nor Ben Carson will be president of the United States. Having observed political campaigns actively since 1988, neither campaign has the connections, opinion leader support or organizational abilities to win the nomination. But they are candidates who can throw a wrench in the process.

Trump and Carson exist as candidates because Americans no longer trust Washington and because Republicans, in particular, no longer trust the Republican Party. Republicans have seen Republican leaders time and time again say they would hold Barack Obama accountable on issues, only to punt. They have seen Republican leaders time and time again say they would repeal Obamacare, only to move the goal posts.

First, Republican leaders said they could do nothing with just the House of Representatives. They needed the Senate, too. The American people gave them the Senate. "But no," said the Republicans, "we need the White House, too." That is not what they said going into 2014, but it was their resolution at the end. Then they gave Obama a blank check to raise the debt ceiling into 2015. They refused to stand with Sen. Ted Cruz during the government shut down. They refused to stand with Sen. Rand Paul on wiretaps. The Republicans have, essentially, refused to stand at all.

Second, Republican leaders have become wedded to special interests. Most Americans realize that Washington no longer represents them. Washington pays attention to lobbyists from unions and the Chamber of Commerce. Major corporations can spend money more efficiently lobbying for loopholes for themselves against competitors in the tax code than they can by innovating. Small businesses are at a disadvantage. American moms see major corporations pushing Common Core and fear their children will just wind up becoming cogs in the wheels of a Fortune 500 company. They see Republicans as bought and paid for.

Third, Republicans in Washington now seem to think the problem with government is Democrats in charge of it and not government itself. They have thrown away the intellectual underpinnings of the Reagan Revolution and now just want power for the sake of having power.

The Republican failures have led to these candidacies. Trump is the disrespectful candidate for people who disrespect the process. He will be rude. He will be loud. He will be confrontational. And he will not get the nomination. But along the way, he will speak to the fears and hopes of a lot of people who no longer connect with Washington or trust the government to get it right.

For a lot of people who hate politicians who go to Washington to get rich off the system like Harry Reid, they can trust that Trump is already a billionaire and so he will not need to enrich himself off the treasury. Trump's campaign, like Carson's, makes no sense in an age when people respect Washington. But it makes a lot of sense in an age when people no longer think their vote matters, but they sure want the mess kicked out of all the politicians they blame for making their vote meaningless.

The people who no longer think they can win in America will side with candidates like Trump even though they don't think he can win, just to watch him strike the match and burn down all they feel betrayed them. They will side with Carson because they want a non-politician to become a politician hoping he will turn out better than careerists. And that, ironically, can give them staying power when coupled with money.

Trump and Carson are not future nominees. Their campaigns, objectively, do not have those things it takes to run a campaign across 50 states. They do not have the experienced consultants, they do not have the pundits who can help them generate free media attention, and they do not have the understanding of what it really takes to run a political campaign because they are not politicians and are not surrounded by people who can offset their lack of understanding.

But in an age when America distrusts Washington and Republicans hate Washington Republicans, Trump and Carson can cause heartburn. That will be enough for some.

“Neither Donald Trump nor Ben Carson will be president of the United States.”

Taking issue with this article, from the very first sentence...

Trump still hasn’t gotten around to filing with the FEC.

I think he’s right. People don’t trust Ben Carson because of his stance on the 2nd Amendment. People don’t trust Trump beause they know the promises he’s made in the past and reneged on and that he’s a grandiose speaker that likes lots of attention.

I agree neither will be POTUS...

Every one of these REPUBLICAN QUISLINGS ran on a promise to stop OBAMA and to get rid of OBAMA CARE. Not only have they reneged on all their promises, these “QUISLINGS” have joined these liberals, socialists and communists to “SCREW” all those people that voted for them. I don’t know when it’ll happen, but all these “QUISLINGS” will pay a heavy price for their perfidy.

My prediction is that Trump will be out of the race before the first ballot is cast in the Iowa caucases. He want’s to be on that debate stage with the rest of the candidates. That is his goal IMO.

I heard it said best on the radio the other day when someone called him a carnival barker. That’s exactly what he is, standing outside the tent, proclaiming very loudly all the things inside the tent that you will get to see if you will simply pay your money. He will say anything he thinks you want to hear to get you inside his tent....

Everybody has their price. Once The Donald figures out what kind of people he needs, with the money he has, he can get them. Political people jump from one campaign to another from time to time. Lay the money on the table and watch how fast a political consultant will sign on to the campaign. Hell yeah!

You could be right.

However there is a year and a half until the election.

You don’t yet know who Trump may float as a running mate. I strongly suggest he is on good terms with Sarah Palin, and believe the two of them could be our next administration.

So I’m not saying you’re incorrect, but I’m not ceding anything to you or anyone, yet.

This is very, very early still. Trump is very well funded.

This is going to kill the Republicans. Lou Dobbs discussed this last night. 25% of those polled think this way. With 25% of the base out for revenge, because their vote no longer makes a difference, there is an epic fail ahead.

Donald Trump and Ben Carson are something none of the others are. Successful in the private sector as is Carly Fiorina. The rest are really only professional politicians. Same as Reid, Clinton and Pelosi, just a little different ideology. While I will vote for three or four of the current crop of professional politicians if they are nominated, not a single one of them will do a damn thing to change that cesspool on the Potomac known as Washington D. C.
We are an empire in decline and all I am hearing is, “Tweak this, tweak that, adjust this, adjust that”.

This primary race has me convinced that the RNC and the republican party are on their last leg as a legit party. Has the appearance of not knowing what is going on at all. I am convinced that high school STUCO elections are better organized that this current one. RNC needs to get their poop grouped or risk going out of business.

The RNC needs to be putting hit ads out on Hillary NOW! She has give the right all kinds of ammo - that will go unused. She is being quiet for a reason, the press lets her do it and before we know it the standard answer will be, “that is so yesterday, next question”. Again, the press will accept that as an answer and tell us to move along.

ideas for ads:
Benghazi = obviously she is not ready to take a 3 am phone call - reports have her sleeping in until 10am
Email server = she is hiding something very important & most importantly, her attitude about being above the law.
War on women = look at Bills past and current (I know it’s not her, but she would be enabling him). Recent article about the uptick in harassment charges under her and Kerry at the state department
Pay for Play = uranium deal is enough to bury anybody
Healthcare = she has always wanted single payer
Liar = did I mention she is a liar

Too many candidates - how is each one going to be given enough time to state their views. We are going to get “sound bites” of each one. We need to interview each one and publish their results on a public forum for all to review. The RNC needs to grow some balls and pick one to support - just the way the RATS have done for Hillary.

Look at what happened during the mid-terms - republicans fought republicans harder than they fought democrats. Look at the lies the McConnell and Boehner tell in order to get elected and then assigned to leadership posts. Again, how does the RNC allow them to promise one thing then do the opposite once in office. If the right wants to be taken seriously, they need to get rid of the current batch of RINOs, PERIOD. That is the only way that they are going to win any support. I harken back to Newts “contract with America” days - that worked very well and had some results. Mainly because goals were set and for the most part accomplished.

I love Erick but he couldn’t even get it right on our recent GA Senate race. I think finally on the third try. The truth is that only God knows who the next President of the US will be. Trump has just as good a shot at it as any of the others.

Like I have said so many times, I like Dr Ben Carson, but think he would be perfect as Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Regarding Trump, before I vote for that RINO, I vote for Rand Paul, even though I don't care for him
