Jim Jordan Puts GOP Leadership on Notice

When a group of House conservatives voted last week to kill a trade bill favored by President Obama, House Speaker John Boehner and other GOP leaders who support the measure steamed. Representative Mick Mulvaney (R., S.C.) celebrated the revolt as a coming-of-age moment for rebel backbenchers.

“Yesterday will be the day that we look back at as the day that conservatives finally started getting organized in the House,” he wrote in a note to the Spartanburg Tea Party.

Led by Representative Jim Jordan (R., Ohio), a platoon of conservatives demanded that Boehner agree to a series of concessions in exchange for their support for so-called Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), legislation that would give President Obama wider latitude to negotiate free-trade agreements. When GOP leadership ignored them, Jordan and his allies tried to kill the bill on a procedural vote — a rare step made more surprising by the lawmakers’ general support for free trade. It was the boldest attempt yet from the recently formed House Freedom Caucus, which Jordan chairs, to counteract Boehner’s perceived tendency to wilt in the face of Democratic pressure.

Last week, leadership galvanized Jordan and his allies by refusing to allow Republican amendments to TPA, even as they negotiated with Democrats in an attempt to rally enough votes to make up for the GOP defections. “So, the Democrats basically got to amend the process; we didn’t,” Jordan says. “That’s a frustration that members have, as well.”

It's totally intentional, submit, kowtow, bend your knee before me, or be shunned and shut out.

Conservatives will either be co-opted, or left out of the process.

Led by Cruz, the GOP will back Obama on ObamaTRADE.

Led by Romney, the GOP will back Obama on ObamaCARE.

It does not matter how conservatives vote,
or what they want.

Jim Jordan is awesome. So far he hadn’t been “co-opted” on anything. He’s in the district just north of me but I wish he was my rep.

They have restructured the bills and the House will re-vote on TPA today. The Senate will have to do the same, but I’m not sure when.

After all the heat he’s taken, it’ll be interesting to see how Cruz holds his position.

I wish he (Jordan) was my rep

I'm just west and got stuck Marcia Fudge (did that ever take some creative gerrymandering). Something's very weird when my rep is better than your rep on this vote!

FWIW, she's gotten much better about representing her whole weird district.

The key phrase in the article is "a platoon of conservatives".

There are 17 card carrying members of the House Freedom Caucus but there are probably a few more that are non declared, and on some issues(including this issue) there are probably some members of the Study Group who will align with the Freedom Caucus. Or, maybe you could say the Tea Party Caucus.

So what you have is a platoon versus a battalion.

While I applaud their tenacity, they need to expand their group numbers before expecting to make any inroads.

It is being framed around this particular issue, but the problem transcends this issue.

The problem is really about whether or not the GOP can govern the nation. This issue is just latest issue that shows that the GOP is split and fractured to the point that it can't accomplish anything.

Jordan had a friend in LA named Jeff Landry, who lost after one term in the House. Landry, like Jordan a strong conservative, is now running for attorney general but faces an uphill climb. People just don’t want conservatives in most districts.

Jim Jordan should be the Speaker, and that way OH might not be offended for putting up such a pitiful failure in Boehner.

The Chamber of Commerce can come begging on hand in knee, pleading for our forgiveness, sometime during the second term of President Elizabeth Warren.

He’s one of the last standing conservatives. Cruz, Gowdy, Huelskamp and Tim Scott are all supporting TSA and are in favor enabling Obamatrade, TTip, TiSA, etc. I’m afraid we’ve lost this battle. When folks like that sleep with K Street it makes me think any idea of the GOP as a conservative party is dead. The corportists have bought near everybody, apparently.

FWIW, I don't think Cruz can get away with "Obama fooled me". Cruz has made it very clear that he's the smartest guy on the block and didn't get fooled. He knows what our misgivings are about a deal that's not clear and lets bad trade pacts pass with a simple majority. He's brighter than us, and by ignoring our misgivings he's putting his analytical skills above ours. There'd be no harm in putting off the vote until Obama's out of office. With his "he knows better" approach, Cruz owns the issues. The dems could pass it as a political ploy to destroy Cruz with consrvatives.

Even if Cruz is correct, the lack of transparency and the urgency in the face of real concerns does not sit well.

“The problem is really about whether or not the GOP can govern the nation. This issue is just latest issue that shows that the GOP is split and fractured to the point that it can’t accomplish anything.”

What is this nonsense about the GOP “governing the nation”? This sounds like Mitch McConnell talking points. The GOP is currently in control of the legislative branch and are not in charge of governing.

The only thing I want to see the GOP “accomplish” in the next year and a half is to stop as much of the Marxist in Chief’s agenda as possible.

What concessions? Half a cup of poison instead of a full cup?
