It makes as much sense as letting Kaiser Whelm pay for WW1 with silver from mines in Montana.

"And, I went on to point out that there'd been virtually no innovation and improvement in American steel mills and that they were investing more money in pantyhose factories, pantyhose factories, than they were in steel, in, in advances in steel technology."

When WWII came along, our airborne troops and pilots were grateful. The silk and nylon parachutes were much better than the steel ones.

Bombing our own steel mills? Add another one to Uncle Joe’s Book of Gaffes. He’s made so many we might be able to make an encyclopedia set by now, lol...

To be fair, Democrats are applying a variant of that policy today: their policies are bombing our cities. /S

I don’t think we bombed any steel mills in World War I. Strategic bombing simply didn’t exist. The closest thing to a strategic bomber was the Handley Page O class (O/100 and O/400.
There were also some Zeppelins (aircraft AND dirigibles) and Gothas. And some Capronis.
But strategic bombing as such simply didn’t exist.

Also its is a giant lie. There have been numerous new steel mills built, and huge investments in new equipment and processes.

He obviously meant WWII. An excusable brainfart, though he seems to have an awful lot of them.

I suspect the point he was trying to make is that after WWII the Germans and Japanese rebuilt with modern technology that was more efficient than our older steel tech.

He is apparently a believer in “broken windows are good for the economy.”

Everyone alive at the time recalls Woodrow Wilson going on TV and making a plea for government investment in pantyhose factories.

There was a desperate shortage as some girls only could afford hose that barely went past the knee.

Nucor started paying dividends in 1973 and has paid them every year thereafter. They use modern electric arc furnaces and mini-mills. If you have antiquated labor rules and management then you can’t make money steel-making but if you don’t it ain’t rocket science.

Joe’s on the loose and mangling the facts and history again!!

From my observation of history, the US squandered an opportunity in the 1945-60 period when choices were made that meant we cashed in on our putative #1 position in every category of commerce and dominated the world. However, we were also re-building our former enemies and they were making technology and process leaps through investment that allowed them to cash in later. Additionally, they didn’t have to put a lot of their capital into defense because we set it up so they couldn’t/wouldn’t/shouldn’t do so. Basically, a perfect storm for short term gains at the expense of the long term.

You know, I’ve always thought the B-58 Hustler would have been a significant advantage during the Civil War.

Unless the opposing side had BOMARC.

Can I have your vote?

People say things like that. Some English people used to say that they were grateful to the Luftwaffe for having forced them to modernize their industry to the degree that they did. Of course, politicians usually don't say such things and shouldn't.

Biden, though, can be counted on to say that kind of stuff. If he didn't always shoot himself in the foot like this, we might have to worry about him becoming president, so maybe we should be glad that he's forever making a fool out of himself before he gets to a place where he could do greater harm to the country.
