Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Tuesday that he and Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) have consulted with President Obama on passing fast-track trade authority after it suffered a big setback last week.
McConnell believes the trade package passed by the Senate in May can still make it to Obamas desk despite getting blown up in the House last week.
The speaker and I have spoken with the president about the way forward on trade, McConnell told reporters. Its still my hope that we can achieve what weve set out to achieve together, which is to get a six-year trade promotion authority bill in place that will advantage the next occupant of the White House as well as this one.
The House on Friday narrowly passed fast-track authority but it defeated accompanying legislation to extend Trade Adjustment Assistance, a program aiding workers displaced by foreign competition. Both measures needed to be approved for the package to be sent to Obama.
The Senate passed fast-track and TAA in a single passage and its unclear whether the Senate would accept sending only trade promotion authority to the White House. The administration has also insisted the two issues should be paired.
Obviously there was a malfunction over in the House on Friday that we all watched with great interest and were not giving up. We still think there may be a path forward to get an achievement here that wed like to get, McConnell said.

TAA is just a smoke screen. TPP is what matters.
“TAA is just a smoke screen. TPP is what matters.”
TAA is what got democrats in the Senate to vote for TPA, which will allow TPP to be strong-armed through without amendments.
It’s all a plot!
You are entirely correct.
Alison Grimes would have been the lesser evil.
Could someone please explan to me what this whole TAA/TPP thing is all about.
Why are Republicans suddenly Obama’s Good Buddies, while his own party is p*ssing in his coffee?
This makes no sense.
The house whip has just fired three congressmen from the whip team because they refused to vote for this crapola. Good, I’m all in favor of both Boehner and McConnell making themselves so incredibly unpopular that they are effectively neutered.
It restores a lot of good feeling that more and more Republican congressmen are refusing to sell America out for a bunch of internationalist socialists. Refusing to sell their votes even when bribed and threatened shows character.
Maybe McConnell and Boehner can be persuaded to take their families and leave America for good.
TAA is Trade Adjustment Assistance. It’s basically a welfare program that’s a payoff to democrats to support Free Trade, Fast Track Authority and these Trade Deals.
TPA is Fast Track Authority. It allows the president to negotiate trade deals without the input of Congress, and then the Congress can only vote yes or no. No amendments are allowed. And of course, these deals are never voted down, they are strong-armed through with any bribes necessary.
TPP is the current trade deal being negotiated (Trans Pacific Partnership), which, once the powers that be are assured that the Congress can’t amend whatever they put together (thanks to TPA), they can put whatever insidious provisions into it. And then Obama, Boehner and McConnell will dutifully ram it through, proabably against some holiday or recess deadline.
So you see how the puzzle pieces fit together. TAA gets democrats to support TPA, and with TPA you get TPP rammed through.
Obama and the republicans are buddies on this issue because they are all in cahoots, are all part of the ruling class, are all oligarchs after the same goal, their own aggrandizement, and the people be damned. And don’t be fooled by the democrats supposedly being against him. They just want a payoff too.
Thanks for that. I find it depressing to contemplate the extent to which Republicans are in bed with Obama when it comes to making corrupt money.
This isn’t the country into which I was born.
Every person inside the Beltway is for sale. The prices for some are less than others.

Yep. When the likes of Cruz and Huelskamp are in bed with the kenyan usurper on something big like TPP you know the party is over. Time to turn out the lights.
I went through a TAA training program several years ago after my medical transcription career was interrupted by offshoring the work to India. I had a favorable experience with the program but I had all sorts of hoops to jump through to get into the program, and sometimes the money was held up for no discernible reason, which was very stressful. I never got a job as a paralegal after finishing the program with an A- average, however, so now I’m back in school on my own dime, working towards a medical coding certificate. IMO the program can be useful to some people, but I question why it’s such a necessary component to a trade agreement that is going to create “millions” of jobs....unless it’s not, and TPTB know it.
Even if someone has a passionate belief in this unknown we-can-trust-Cruz,Boehner,McConnell,Obama thing, it's over. Anyone with an ounce of respect for the concerns of US citizens would put it on hold until after the next election.
It's this kind of arrogance that makes a Trump candidacy look real good.
Traitors all!
You're right. The sad part about that is that they will simply continue to be traitors, as "We the People" don't care! American Idol is on! Gotta vote for the latest loser there! It would be nice if we would find some cajones and start treating them as traitors, complete with rope and gallows.
LOL.
Where are all those “lessor evil” Freepers?
Stop Obamatrade!
Nailed it Prince of Space (Movie Sign!). Why the need for TAA if Free Trade is supposed to create jobs?
It apparently funds teachers and schools....
If the GOP was against, the Rats would be for it. I do not trust either party on this.
