Chinese-owned NH solar project costs ratepayers $1.22M

New Hampshire utility ratepayers will pay a Taiwanese company $1.22 million to build the state’s largest solar installation so that a small town can save about $500,000 in power costs over the life of the project.

Taiwan’s Walsin Lihwa, parent company of Borrego Solar, will use Chinese-made solar panels in the 3.5-acre project, which is supposed to be finished in July. It will supply power to several municipal buildings in the area but only some of the time: the town of Peterborough (population: 6,284) gets only 197 sunny days per year.

“What a great project,” deadpanned David Kreutzer, a senior fellow with the Heritage Foundation. “A $1.2 million grant allows Peterborough to save $500,000! And that doesn’t include the cross-subsidies of net metering.” Net metering requires all other ratepayers to cover the fixed costs of electricity distribution so that solar users have a safety net when the sun doesn’t shine.

Maybe it’s things like this that have given a lot of Asians the idea that Americans truly are stupid?

Some foreigners have figured out that you don’t have to come here illegally and get on Welfare and Food Stamps to fleece the US taxpayer. Just start some crony-capitalist “Green” company and you can pick the US taxpayers’ pockets from your home country!

The $500,000 savings is probably optimistic. If people believe they’re getting “free energy” from the sun, they’re more likely to be wasteful.

“Spending $2.6 million for a 1-megawatt system is equivalent to spending $1.3 billion for a 500-megawatt power plant,” said William Yeatman, a senior fellow with the Competitive Enterprise Institute. That’s about three times higher than “the typical coal power plant outfitted with all the latest technology. The only reason this is viable is due to subsidies — taxpayer and ratepayer,” he said.

Let's hear it for big government! Yeah!

And won't those panels be covered with snow most of the winter?

You might get ideas about Asians if you spent any time in a casino.

That grant money comes out of someone's pocket. This is pure politics....It makes the locals happy....but they're still screwing someone elsewhere out of the money.

And they couldn't find an American company??

How about a "No American Company, No Grant Money" policy.

“And won’t those panels be covered with snow most of the winter? “

Truth is the tilt they need at that latitude to have will cause most snow to fall off. And if properly located in the sunlight, quick to melt.

good to know they’ll melt off after the towns people have frozen to death in the dark of that blizzard.

While I agree that Peterborough is a coven of leftists, most of them are quite upscale.

So, leeches they’re not, in the welfare sense. The only reason for this project is so that the commies in “St. Petersborough” can feel good about themselves.

Ironic fact is that solar creates energy under the easiest of weather conditions. The utility infrastructure must still be built to create sufficient energy under the harshest of conditions and the times when no energy at all from the sun is available.

I thought we already HAD that infrastructure, only now the EPA Naziis are forcing us to turn it off.

My point is that we cannot reduce utility costs anywhere when solar is built. Always remember what time of the 24 hour day is the coldest requiring the most energy. And that’s NOT when the sun is overhead.

I haven’t been to a casino in many years-—and then I only played the nickel slots—LOL! Not much of a gambler…..

If I ever have reason to go again, I’ll see what the Asians are doing—maybe I can learn something.

Good grief! Why don’t they let that poor man RIP?

Yes, the stupid are among us (not you and me, of course—LOL!)

I learned that I should have gotten in to a cash business. If I had, I would then need to avoid the Pai Gow, Mini Baccarat, and Blackjack tables.
