Navy to Christen Littoral Combat Ship for Gabrielle Giffords (who is anti-gun) on Saturday

The tenth Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is slated to be christened for former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in a Saturday ceremony in Mobile, Ala, the Pentagon announced this week.

Tomorrow, Jill Biden — the wife of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden — will break a bottle of sparkling wine in a ceremony to officially name the fifth Austal USA-built Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship after former democratic representative Gabrielle Giffords.

“The christening of the future USS Gabrielle Giffords marks the beginning of what is certain to be a long life for this great ship,” said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus in a Thursday statement.

Giffords, a former member of the House Armed Services Committee from Arizona, was shot in a 2011 mass shooting that killed six and injured 11. She resigned her office in 2012.

That same year, Mabus announced the tenth LCS would be named after Giffords in a move that stirred a minor outcry in some naval circles.

The author’s name certainly applies. LaGrone.

Maybe Colt can prevent bankruptcy by naming a gun after her.

Broke the bottle. Many comments about there being a couple of open spaces that won’t be filled. CIC won’ be fully operational and will only function at half it’s capability. The judge or others that actually died in the attack. Hmmm. No ship named for them.

Sorry....This is wrong. Since when do we name ships after ordinary citizens...who are living no less.

Hmmm. Naming ships, public buildings, etc. after living persons is something normally done in banana republics and in dictatorships (Stalingrad, for example).

Some CVNs were named for Presidents who were alive at the time they (the ships) were laid down. I thin Carl Vinson was still alive when that CVN was named for him, too. And there is the SSN USS Jimmy Carter (blech!). Don’t think it’s a good idea, but that’s politics.

Of course we all deeply regret that she was shot. But, it’s worth asking, what has she done in life, to have the honor of having a navy ship after her? I was surprised at this news.

Arleigh Burke was alive when a destroyer named after him was commissioned. I don’t know of anyone who would have objected to that honor.

It’s ironic. The LCS is full of holes and doesn’t work much, can’t fight and expensive as hell to operate when it is able. Just like a Liberal

For a liberal the highest status one can attain is that of victim. A status that the individual had nothing to do with, did not cause and did not want to happen.

Strange people, those liberals.

Can’t argue with that. I have no problem with naming warships after real heroes/leaders, living or dead. Problem these days is warships that are named more for political expediency than merit.

Tens of thousands of American fighting men have been killed and wounded since 9/11 alone, and they name this after her.

Pathetic.

And Littoral combat ships are supposed to be for combat. (even though they are far less powerful than a PT boat)
How does this ships name inspire a fighting spirit?

There's only one thing that prevents this analogy from being perfect. But once the navy removes all the guns (because guns are bad), then we'll have a perfect match.

Perhaps a tough nickname will do the trick. How about "The Galloping Gabby"? No? Hmmm...this is going to require considerable more thought.

Although it’s very sad that Giffords was shot, I fail to make the connection between her name and a combat ship bristling with weapons. A typical non-sensical liberal leap I guess. Makes no sense in the real world. Why would she even be pleased?

I know ill get flak from someone, but even though she has brain damage, it would have shown some true class on her part to have refused it.

A true badass, as they claim she is, would surprise everyone at the christening by announcing the name of a Marine or Sailor who has died in combat, point at the family she had secretly flown in, order the navy to paint on the new name by the end of the day, then swing the champagne bottle. But that would be the act of a leader.

*(IF a littoral “combat” ship can take that kind of hit, the full impact of a champagne bottle)
