The U.S. government is investigating two Indian outsourcing firms and a California power company over whether they violated labor and immigration laws by replacing American workers with foreigners on temporary work visas.

The Labor Department said it is trying to ensure the Indian companies and Southern California Edison complied with the terms of the nation’s skilled-worker-visa system. Controversy has exploded in recent months over whether these foreign workers, who typically have visas known as H-1Bs, displace or complement U.S. workers.

A Labor Department spokeswoman said she couldn’t provide any more details of an “open investigation.” [...]

H-1B ping. Let me know if you're not on the list and want to be added (or are and want to be removed).

If the displaced workers were merely whitebread crackers, then what’s the problem? < / sarcasm >

I don’t expect anything to happen. H-1b abuses have been going on for a long time, it is institutional corruption at this point.

The fact that they even feel the need to pretend to be doing something is a good sign. Both parties' feet need to be held to the fire.

All eyewash. This is just a way to help Hillary and Obama. The objective is to portray them as enforcers of the law. Obama did something similar with his we have deported more illegals than any other President, which was a bold-faced lie. Just the opposite is the case.

This lays the predicate for amnesty and increased guest worker programs. The Feds are on the case.

My son, who is a computer programmer, was talking about this yesterday. How the Indians are working for multiple companies therefore have multiple applications for the visa.

He said some companies are wising up because the quality of the work of some foreign nationals is sub par.

And other companies continue to not look past the next quarterly profit report.

But no mention of Disney who required fired employees to train their replacement? Big companies can afford the VIG I guess.

I believe Disney used one of those firms - so technically any violation would be theirs not Disney's. Ain't loopholes great?

Many people on here won't want to hear it, but USAA does the same thing with TCS and another called HCL. They also off-shore a ton of work to India...

I was on a contract back in 1994 where there were four people with an H1-B Visa, three more who were on some sort of arrangement that allowed them to work while they waited on their Visa, and two more who had an expired H1-B Visa but had some sort of waiver that allowed them to work another 180 days before they left the country.

I think about that situation every time I see the "limit" on H1-B Visas stated as being 65,000 now and how someone is going to increase that fivefold but make sure the regulations are followed. All nine of those folks were following the regulations, no doubt about it, but I bet that nine folks counted as four H1-B Visa slots.
