A Big Piece of the Secret "Free Trade" Deal Was Voted Down
Mises Institute ^ | June 12, 2015 | Ryan McMaken

Full-blown free trade is about total decentralization in trade policy. In a country that enjoys free trade — that is, a country that has implemented unilateral free trade — it is fully up to the individual consumer and entrepreneur as to whether or not he wishes to do business with foreign suppliers. Under such a system, a baker who must buy delivery trucks and flour for his business can choose whether or not he will obtain his supplies from foreign or domestic suppliers. In most cases, he will choose the most economical option, and the marketplace will reflect this reality.

Trade agreements like the TPP and NAFTA, on the other hand, leave these decisions not up to individual citizens, but to government regulators and negotiators who make decisions in the interest of the state and its favored special interests.

“Trade agreements like the TPP and NAFTA, on the other hand, leave these decisions not up to individual citizens, but to government regulators and negotiators who make decisions in the interest of the state and its favored special interests.”

And the underlying “secret” parts of these so-called “free trade” agreements have almost nothing to do with trade of any kind at all, but rather they drive some hidden political agenda that most of us wouldn’t allow if we were informed. I think Assange (Wikileaks) says that only 5 of the 29 parts of TPP have anything to do with trade policy. You can bet that immigration and gun control are woven into this “deal.”

And who makes these decisions prior to such agreements being made?

We need trade agreements - we don’t need SECRET trade agreements

TPA, if it is implemented, will place a number of restrictions on trade agreements, one of which will be the requirement that TPP or any other subsequent trade agreement, will be published for 60 days prior to any vote by Congress.

Like Bammy follows any rules he doesn't like....Same with H!, our next likely POTUS.

Well because the TPA was voted down, you’re going to get a SECRET trade agreement, because Obama is going to ram one down our throat with executive order.

Obama wanted TPA to fail, and you guys all walked right into the trap. Cruz knew what the hell he was doing the entire time.

A real “free trade” agreement would require only one sentence:

“Any and all national legal barriers to trade implemented by a member country may be duplicated by any other member country in its dealings with that country, until such time as those barriers have been removed.”

The end.

Many years ago my brother came up with a one sentence trade/tariff policy for the U.S.:

Commencing on xxx date, all tariffs imposed against any country will be at the level of the highest tariff that country imposes on any U.S. export.

That should quickly evolve into ‘how low can you go.’

TPA has been passed in both the House and Senate,. The “bill” hinges on the TAA clause that will see a re-vote this coming week. The TAA provides funds for workers displaced by the TPP that is supposed to set hiring on fire from “free trade” Got that? See any irony there? The TAA has offsets for people fired by the TPP that is supposed to encourage hiring. Only in America.

For it to be binding, Obama has no choice but to follow the rules, which are law. No other country will agree to something that is not legally binding. Without the backing of Congress, nothing in the TPP bill will ever go into effect. Anything Obama tries unilaterally will be DOA.

You’ve made a good point. I have never seen so many lemmings fall in line with the Democrats, always a wrong way to go.

There is nothing secret about a bill that has to be published at least 60 days before it is voted on.

If you want a secret deal, you will have one if TPA doesn’t pass. TPA is the best guarantee of transparency and Congressional involvement in the process we can get. It make the President More accountable in trade agreements, not less.

Read the comparisons in the earlier TPA Comparison thread. The first links don’t work, but the links posted by Isara further down the thread work.

That sounds naive to me.

Just look at the US (Bammy and his minions) and the other western nations' negotiations with Iran for a clue.

The transparency that TPA requires for any trade agreement is not naive.

If you want a secret deal, you will have one if TPA doesn’t pass.

Considering all the past rhetoric about "we need to pass it to find out what's in it", it ought to be much much easier to vote against this if you can claim you don't know what's in it and it needs to be voted against because secret or not, this deal will not be in our best interests anymore than TARP was or anymore than Obamacare was. Have you not figured out how this game is played yet?

TPA will give all of us a chance to see what the TPP is all about and to raise hell with Congress for the 60 days before they vote. It worked with the gang of eight immigration bill!

Transparency is not in Bammy’s lexicon for actual meaning.
