The female prison employee at the center of an investigation into the escape of two killers pleaded not guilty Friday night to helping them flee the maximum security facility.

Prison tailor shop instructor Joyce Mitchell, 51, was arraigned on a felony charge of promoting prison contraband and misdemeanor count of criminal facilitation, authorities said.

Mitchell is accused of aiding in the escape of inmates David Sweat and Richard Matt from the Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York last week.

She entered the court room with her hands cuffed in front of her, clad jeans and a lime green top looking terrified. She did not speak. She was ordered held in jail on $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond on felony county and is due back in court Monday morning.

Awww, that's a shame.

Just wait until they start to find the bodies left behind by these 2 guys. She’ll be hooked up with accessory to murder real quick.

The sad part is that this is the best outcome for her.

The plan was that she was supposed to drive the getaway car. So, she drives these guys out of the area, then what? Then she becomes a big piece of excess baggage for two killers. You can fill in the blanks.

When attractive people romance ugly people, they want something and it’s not sex.

These guys wanted out of jail, most pretty girls just want to go shopping.

Well, well, well. A homely, overweight woman sweet-talked to by a con, who happen to be a murderer too. Will wonders never cease. I hope she goes to prison for her part in this madness, and I hope the authorities don’t take them back alive. A win for society and the taxpayer.

Exactly. Those guys should have been dead already.

New York is really screwed up. Death penalty is illegal for vicious criminals, but legal for innocent babies.

As former prison employee, she probably won’t be treated too well by other convicts, even in a minimum security “safe” prison.

Maybe the two cons stole the combination to her padlock on her locker or something similar and she knows nothing about it.let’s hear from her before we assume she knowingly assisted the cons to escape.

Yes, I’m afraid you’re right. But she should’ve known that and took that into consideration. Similar to cops who go rogue and end up in prison and have the same concerns. Think before you act saves a lot of trouble, even can save your life?

Obviously she should be legally presumed innocent, but I don’t think the “she knew nothing about it” argument is going to fly, considering that she has reportedly made incriminating statements, and has been providing information to help track the guys down (information she had by initially participating in the plot).

"Prison Tailor Shop?!!! What in blazes for?! "

NY's prison system has its own industrial corporation called Corcraft. Many of the prisons across the State produce items that are sold across the country. For instance, when I worked at Auburn they made license plates, road signs, and office furniture. Clinton Correctional (Dannemora) has the tailor shop where they make inmate clothing, and industrial uniforms. Here's a list of the various programs available. If you click on each link, they will show the different prisons these programs run in.
