The main goal of the criminal justice system is when you commit a petty offense, they want to put you under the supervision of a parole officer, go to a court ordered "class" of some type, pay fines, keep the money rolling in to keep the system running...
The court appointed DA will break arms to get you to plead out to a lesser offence so it doesn't go to court, after all that's expensive court time and personnel to deliberate a minor offense...
First hand knowledge. My son was caught up in a drug sting...his real crime was sitting on the porch of a drug dealing apt building, (he lived next door) He did have a small amount of weed on him, but since this was a well publicized police initiative cracking down on drug sellers, he was cut no slack and charged with a felony...
I begged him to DO NOT believe your court appointed attn, she's lying to you when she is saying the case will be dropped... since the amount of weed was minor...
Bottom line is she told him to plead out to a lesser charge (still a 3rd degree felony)...
I told him to force her to take it court, but she told him he could face jail time if she went to court...
He spent 18 months on probation, paid about the same as a half way decent lawyer would cost in fines...
I almost shot the parole officer when he come knocking on my door at midnight because he would not identify himself doing a bed check on my son...
Someone knocks on my door after 10:00 pm, I will be armed...

Think I have to agree with you there; Zimbabwe, Republic of the Congo, Zaire, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Angola and the list goes on, and on and on and on. Doesn’t seem to be an end to it on what they used to call The Dark Continent.
