New Harris County Sheriff Axes LGBT Liaison Program

Last month, after finally announcing his candidacy for mayor of Houston, Adrian Garcia stepped down as Harris County Sheriff and county leaders appointed someone strikingly different – an older white Republican lawman who's been itching for job ever since Garcia hinted he might resign to run for mayor.

As with most transitions of power, there was a sweeping, abrupt shakeup within the top ranks when former Precinct 4 Constable Ron Hickman took the reins as sheriff. Just two weeks after his appointment, Hickman had fired numerous people, demoted many others, and replaced his first several commander positions – top brass at the sheriff's office who oversee operations like criminal investigations to the jail – with white men. Garcia told the Houston Chronicle the apparent lack of diversity was “unconscionable,” and Hickman fired back at Garcia while lunching with his base at the Downtown Houston Pachyderm Club's weekly meeting last Thursday.

I remember around 2012 I think it was a conservative black guy was running for Harris County Sheriff with the endorsement of Joe Arpaio and was talking about putting criminals in tents.

Today Austin’s PBS posted a drag queen with It’s LGBT Pride Month at KLRU! and I immediately thought of the thousands of LBGT ‘liasons’ at Fed that need firing and the job cancelled.

Wow...a sheriff who actually wants to do police work instead of cuddling weirdos and sick freaks...

Dept. spent a ton of money on training their dept. on LGBT issues, special officers to deal with LGBT people who need police help, which implies regular officer will discriminate...

Seriously, HOW MANY LGBT people are there in this county that need special care and consideration...1 % of 1% is probably a high number...

It is offensive to imply white men cannot do the job properly with crimials of all races.

If they were all women, all black, or all hispanic, this little twit woudn’t say squat.

Sheriff Hickman didn't make his staffing decisions based on race and level of gayness?

That takes courage these days.
