Yep. Was water testing one once with a boat mechanic who had just finish a repair job on an outboard Merc. We were moving at a pretty good speed ... probably about 30 or so ... when he said “hang on.” When he gunned it, that thing took off like a dragster. We hit about 70 pretty darn quick.
My Brother-in-law’s family owned the marina back there, off Glen Lake. I worked there a couple of summers. Hefting canoes onto the river, hauling boats out of winter storage. Hard, hard work, but those were great summers!
The media refer to Rubio’s boat as a “luxury boat”.
That’s not a speed boat, it is a center console fishing boat. It’s not even big enough for going offshore. Anything under 35 ft. will beat you up.
It is not a Fountain, Cigarette or a Baja or any of the other real “speed boats”. It certianly is mot an MTI cat.
I’ve been running and racing offshore boats for years. What Rubio paid for the entire boat costs less than one of my motors.

You quite obviously have never traveled the Intercoastal Waterway in the Miami, Fort Luaderdale area where wealthy buttheads get 60 feet long boats with a couple thousand horses and speed along at breakneck speeds, illegally.

Wow! Did he do the Crystal River canoe rental trips? I did that every year. What a wonderful place Glen Lake is. And, from what I can tell, it’s still wonderful. Very beautiful! And the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes? Stunning! I’d like to go back!

Yes, that was us. Crystal Harbor. If you were up there in summer ‘82 or ‘83 I probably loaded your canoe onto the river for you. Had to pick them up in Glen Arbor numerous times a day also. We had an old Willy’s Jeep with a trailer hitched up for picking up the canoes. What a blast! They sold the place in ‘84 and I moved away to Illinois. I still have family in Traverse City. Still a beautiful place indeed. Winter or Summer.
Oh man! My family went thee in the la the 50s and early 60s. Used to fish on the Crystal River, and never caught anything. But it was just so wonderful and peaceful! I just might buy a plot up there!
